Description

MARY E. VHILDRETH. Sad-Iron Holders No. 158,841. Pater ltedlan. 19,1875.
WITNESSIES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MARY E. HILDRETH, on MOUNT PLEASANT, IowA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,841, dated January 19, 1875; application filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. HILDRETH, of Mount Pleasant, in the county ofHenry and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Smoothing-Iron Holders; and. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings,
engaging with the handle of a sad-iron, where by the said guard-holder is prevented from endwise displacement when the said sad-iron is passed, in the act of ironing, to and fro over a garment or other article, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the smoothing-plate of a sad-iron, of which a is a cylindrical thickened portion of the handle thereof, and a a narrow stem connecting the two ends of the said thickened portion with the front and rear ends of the smoothingplate. B designates a guard-holder, preferably made of wood, having in its base a deep longitudinal groove, of which the upper portion, I), is cylindrical andthe lower portion, 1),
rectangular in form to conform, respectively,
to the thickened portion a and thestem c of the handle. The cylindrical upper portion is closed at one end, as seen in Fig. 2, so that,
when the guard-holder is passed over the han dle of the sad-iron, it shall be checked and prevented from forward displacement when the sad-iron is pushed from the operator in the act of ironing or smoothing an article or garment. O designates a locking-hook, which is transversely applied in perforations through the guard-holder B in such a manner that the lower arm 0 shall be engaged under the said handle in the angle formed at their point of union by the thickened portion a and the rear stem a, while the upper arm 0 shall be in the upper portion of the guard-holder B. I have secured upon the projecting end of the arm 0 a button, D, for the purpose of affording convenient means for locking and unlocking the holder.
It will be seen from the above description that, by means of this holder, I have prevented the hand of the operator from being brought into contact with the heated handle of a sad-iron; also, that said holder is removably adjustable upon the handle, and that,
by means of the lockinghook and the closed end of the groove, all endwise displacement is prevented.
I am well aware that wooden handles, used to prevent the hand coming in contact with the heated handle of a sad-iron, are not new;
hence I do not claim such invention broadly. I am also aware that a grooved wooden handle has heretofore been employed in combination with the top crossbar of the metal handle of the sadiron, pins or other suitable fastenings being used to connect them together, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cylindrical holder-block B, constructed entire, and longitudinally channeled underneath in the form of a groove-recess, having its upper or interior portion 11 enlarged to slip endwise over the enlarged portion of the handle of an ordinary sad-iron, and the lower portion or neck I) contracted to allow the passage of the handle-stem a, and to prevent the escape of said enlarged portion of the handle, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY E. HILDRETH. Witnesses:
ANDREW GRAU, Gno. G. VAN ALLEN.
