Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN B. SALISBURY AND JOHN MGOAHEY, OF PROVIDENCE, R. I.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,158, dated February 29, 1876; application filed September 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern 7 -Be it known that we, STEPHEN B. SALIS- BURY and JOHN MGCAHEY, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of lthode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Flat Irons, of which the following is a specfication: I
This invention consists in constructing the handle so as to be easily removed when the iron is to behea-ted, and as easily puton again when it is to be used, and in a secure fasten ing to hold it on when in use also in placing the handle at an inclined angle to the body of the flat-iron, to make it less tiresome to the hand in using it.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the flatiron. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center. Fig. 3 shows the front end of the handle with the outside washer removed. Fig. 4 shows the back end of the handle. I
A is the'body of the flat-iron. O is a standard cast on the body. A rod, B, is secured to the top of this standard with its front end an inch, or thereabout, higher. than .the back end. F is a handle of wood or some other imperfect conductor of heat. a a are two collar-washers secured to the ends of the bandle F. The holes in the washers are made just large enough to go on the rod B easily, while the hole in thehandle is made larger, so the wood shall not touch the rod. The Washer a at the front end of the handle has a recess in its face to receive the latchc. which swings on a screw that holds the outside washer on, and fits into a notch out in the rod B when the handle is on. A spring, d, which presses on the lower end of the latch (see Fig.
, 3) throws it into the notch and tends to keep itthere. The washer a, at the back end of the handle, has arecess, 0, cut in it on the underside (see Fig. 4) to receive the project ing corner of the flange of standard 0, which thereby prevents the handle from turning on the rod. In putting the handle on it is only necessary to keep-the notch in the backend down so that the corner of the flange shall enter it, and the end of the rod being pointed, will push the latch to one side until it'reaches the notch made for it, into which the spring will throw it, and thus securely lock the handle on. When the iron is put on the heater the handle is easily slipped off by pressing the latch to one side with the-thumb of the cloth or holder, and one handle will servefor a set of irons.
Having thus described our improvements, what we claim as our invention is 1. The removable handle F, in combination with the single standard 0, said standard being placed on the. back end of the iron, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the latch c, removable handle F, and rod B, rigidly secured to a standard on the back end of the iron, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
