To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. GALLUP, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bill-Posting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to poster devices and aims to provide a board or base to which may be removably secured suitable advertising matter, such as posters, bulletins and the like.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which all of the edges of the sheet are securely clamped to theboard and protected, thereby preventing such edges from becoming torn or mutilated by the wind or from other reasons.

The invention also aims to provide spring actuated clamps constructed so as to protect the actuating parts from the elements, the clamping member forming a housing for such parts. I

The invention further includes means whereby each of the spring actuated clamps may be held from engagement with the'board to facilitate the insertion of the poster matter there'beneath.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear, when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings. in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, there is shown in the drawings, a board or base 1, which may be of any desired or suitable configuration. The board shown is substantially rectangular in shape andv has secured near each of the corners thereof bearing brackets, each including a securing portion 2, designed to be secured to the board by means of screws or other fastening devices. The bearing brackets in addition to the securing portion, are provided with right-angularly arranged laterally extending flanges 3, each of which is provided with an opening f.

The bearing brackets have their flanges 3 disposed away from the. edges of the board and arranged to receive within the openings 4, the pintles carried by the clamping members 5. Each of the clamping members is formed of an elongated transversely g 'ooved casing, open at one side and disposed within this casing, longitudinally thereof and preferably near one edge of the open side is a rod 6, the said rod projecting through openings provided in end plates 7 secured at each end of the casing. The projecting ends of the rod 6 form pintles 8 which are adapted to be received within the openings t provided in the bearing brackets. The rod (3 has mounted thereon a coil spring 9, arranged so as to normally force the edge of the casing opposite the said rod into engagement with the board 1. The construe tion just described provides a spring actuated clamping chamber, beneath which is designed to be placed one edge of a poster, bulletinor other advertising matter. Knobs 10 are secured to each of the clamping members for convenience of manipulation.

By the arrangement shown and described the clamping members are disposed so as to provide a substantially rectangular frame within which may be secured the marginal edges of the poster or bulletin, thus protecting the edges from the elements and. preventing them from becoming torn or mutilated. This is especially desirable when the device is used for displaying costly lithographs, such as theatrical or moving picture posters, the latter being usually changed from day to day, so that the device is especially valuable in this connection.

In order to hold the engaging edges of the clamping member, from contact with the board, the bearing brackets have projecting therefrom studs 11, each of these studs being disposed ithin the path of movement of the clamping member, when the said member is in a raised position, the arrangement of the spring being such as to force the end of the casing toward the stud when the clamping member is in a raised position. By swinging the clamping members upon its pintles, said member will be drawn toward the stud 11 by the action of the spring 9 causing the engagement of the stud beneath the end of the member to hold the latter from contact with the board. By arranging the rod and spring in the manner shown, the same is thoroughly protected from all elements, so that the said spring and rod are prevented from rusting. It is preferred that the contacting edge of the clamping member be turned over or folded, thereby stiffening the same and preventing a sharp edge from contacting with the poster or bulletin.

' Various changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes.

Having described the invention what is claimed is:

1. A device of the class described, the combination with a substantially rectangular base of brackets located at each corner thereof, spring actuated clamping devices disposed transversely and longitudinally of said base, pintles projecting over each end of said clamping device, said pintles having bearings in said brackets, whereby said clamping device will be arranged in rectangular form and means carried by said brackets and disposed in the path of movement of said clamping device for holding the latter against action of the spring.

2. A device of the class described comprising in combination a base, brackets located at each corner thereof, spring actuated clamping devices pivotally mounted in said brackets, studs projecting from said brackets and means whereby when the clamping members are moved to a raised position they will be automatically moved laterally into engagement with said studs.

3. A device of the class described comprising in combination a base, brackets located at each corner thereof, clamping devices pivotally mounted in said brackets, studs projecting from said brackets and normally disengaged from the clamping devices and combined means for automatically moving the clamping devices into engagement with said studs when the former is in a raised position and for automatically returning the said devices into engagement with the board when released from the stud.

4. A device of the class described, the combination with a substantially rectangular base of spring actuated clamping devices, each including an elongated member, a shaft extending longitudinally of said member, said shaft projecting beyond each end thereof to provide pintles, a spring surrounding said shaft and arranged to normally force one edge of the member in contact with the base and to-move said member longitudinally of the shaft when the former is raised from the base, brackets located at each corner of the base to form bearings for said pintles and studs projecting inwardly from said brackets in the path of the elongated member when the latter is raised, to hold the same against clownward movement.
