Description
MARY M-CGEVIRAN.
Improvement in Stair-Covers.
No. 132,727, Pagented Nov. 5,187;
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY MOGEVIRAN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN s'i'AiR-covERs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 132,727, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY McGEvrRAN, of the city of N ew York, in the county and State ot' New York, have invented anew and useful Stair Slip or Covering; and do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same, reference being had to the accompa-nyin g drawing, in which- Figure 1- is a side view of my improved stair slip or covering as it appears when attached to the stairs; Fig. 2 is a front view ot' the same; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of the metallic side pieces or clasps, showing different ways of. attaching the slip to the stairs.
My invention relates to providing a removable covering for vthe steps of stairs, which A may be used either as a means for protecting the stair-carpet from Wear or to take its place entirely-as a covering for stair-steps.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and the manner in which it is used.
A in the drawing is a piece of oil-cloth or carpet, or other suitable material, cut of the desired width and of sufficient length to cover one step of the stairs and lap over the edge of the same. B B are pieces .of metal, open or slotted along one side, into which opening the edges of the cloth or covering A are introduced and held in position by the opening being pressed together, or by passing rivets through the sidepieces B and covering A, or any other convenient means. The side pieces or clasps B are made with one end curved so as to lap over the edge of the step, and the other end is provided either with a loop, which the stair-rod may pass through and thus hold the slip in position on the step, as shown at a,
0. The curved part of the side pieces, which laps over the edge of the step, may be made pliable so as to be readily bent to the shape of the molding usually placed at the edges of stair-steps; The portion A may be made oi' zinc, if desired, which will readily slip into the grooves in the side clasps B; but if it be of carpet or 'oil-cloth, the edges maybe provided with a metallic or other stiff binding where they enter the side clasps and at the top and bottom.
It will be perceived from the foregoing description that my improved stair slip or covering may be made of a variety of materials, and will serve either as a substitute for carpet or a protection for the same, and can readily pe placed upon the stairs or removed thererom.
When the part A becomes worn it may be removed and another piece substituted by slipping oft' the side clasps B and attaching them to a new piece.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A removable slip or covering for stair-steps, made of any suitable material, in combination with metallic strips on each side constructed so as to reach over and clasp under the nosing or projecting edge ofthe step, and also to ellgage with the stair-rod or other suitable fastening at the back edge of the step, substantially as described.
