STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GOUGH AND ALFRED D. WILLARD, OF EAST HAMPTON, CO NN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLElGH-BELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,657, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEO. W. GOUGH and ALFRED D. WILLARD, of East Hampton, in the county of M iddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sleigh-Bells; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 4 is a central section of my invention attached to strap.
My invention has relation to the novel construction and arrangement of sleigh-bells, and has for its object to provide for the more secure attachment of the bells to the bell-strap so that the bells may not turn or sway independently of the strap. My invention, therefore, consists in casting a sleigh-bell with an oval concave crown or surmounting flange to embrace the rivet; in providing the edge of said crown with teeth or serrations; and in so riveting the bell to the bellstrap that part of the leather shall be pressed into theconcavity of the serrated crown" and the serrations or teeth embedded in the leather thereby producing a perfectly rigid fastening to prevent the bell from turning'or independently swaylng.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a spherical sleigh-bell, which, for the purposes of my invention, I cast with an oval concave crown, B, which I provide with angular teeth or notches, as shown, by the use of a file or in any other suitable manner. 0 designates the rivet with which I secure said bell to the bell-strap. The shank of this rivet fits a socket in the center of the crown B, and is provided with a headthe under surface of which is convex.
When the bell is attached to the strap the convex surface of the rivet-head forces the leather into the concavity of the crown, as illustrated in Fig. 1, thus preventing the bell from swaying or becoming loose, and causes the teeth of the crown to enter the leather and prevent the bell-from turning. The crown is oval in form, so that if any of the teeth should cut the leather the others will not thereby have a channel made in which they can follow, as, by reason of the oval form, the teeth lie at different distances from the rivet, and hence will have a tendency to move in different circles. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sleigh-bell having its serrated base made oval and concave to receive the strap forced into the concavity of said base by the rivet-head made convex on its under surface for this purpose, as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. GOUGH. ALFRED D. WILLARD.
Witnesses CHARLES H. GOFFE, WM. B. CHAPMAN.
