Description
WI LLIAM v. KAY.
I improvement in Harness Pad Trees.-
' Nb. 115,062. I Patented May 23,1871.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM V. KAY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS PAD-TREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,062, dated May 23, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. KAY, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Harness Pad-Trees5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is atop view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures ot' the drawing.
My invention has for its object to provide a harness pad-tree so arranged as to adjust thepad to the form of the back of the horse; and to that end consistsin the manner of bringing the pad-plate to the yoke, whereby a free-andeasy movement is obtained.
In the accompanying drawing, A istheyoke, which is provided at its ends with a stirrup, as shown at B. (J U are the pad-plates, to which the pads are respectively secured in the ordinary manner. The said plates are provided with a projecting surface, extending upward slightly above the upper side, as shown at a, and is made a part of the plate. D D are metal plates, which are bent or formed, at a point near its center, in proper shape to receive or pass over the pivot of the stirrup, and are connected at their inner ends to and upon the projecting portion of the pad-plate, by means of a screw or rivet, d, passing through the same, and at their outer ends by the shank of the terret E, which passes through the same, to and through a screwthreaded nut, c, secured within a recess formed in the lower side of the pad-plates, thus forming a joint at the connection of the yoke with the said pad plates, by which means the pads are easily adjusted to the form of the back of the horse.
It may be further stated that the outer end of each of said plates may be secured to the padplate by means of a screw or rivet pass in g through the same, independent of the terret, when desired; also, that the ends of the yoke may be provided with a shank through which to pass a horizontal pivot, over which pivot the plate 0 is passed, as shown at F, by which an equivalent joint is obtained.
Having thus described the nature and ob ject of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The yoke A, provided with a stirrup, B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the yoke A, when provided with stirrup B, the plate D, and padplate 0, arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses: WM. V. KAY.
