COMBNATION-LOCK.
g Specification of `Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3o, l1919.
Applicatiim led May.23, 1918. Serial No. 236,082.
,To` all whom z't may concern:
zen-of the United States, residing` at Youngsp vtoWn -in the county of Mahoning and State ofhio, liavehinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of whichL thev followingv is a specification.
.This invention relates to combination locks, more yparticularly to an improvement in lock structurevset'forth4 inLetters Patent No. 1,178,348,4grante`d'to me February 29, 1916, and not only embodies the ob]ects and advantages set forth in the Letters Patent referred to but has for its further ob) ect to provide the lock with means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth for maintaining. the shackle in an open position, when required, thereby preventing the lock from acciden-,` tally closing.
A fui her object of the invention 1s to provide a lock, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, including a locking. armarranged in the path of a series of locking disks when the lock is open, and to furtherprovide means associating with said locking arm for shifting it clear of the locking disk to enable the convenient closing of the lock when occasion so requires.
The invention further relates to a combination lock which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, etlicient in its use and comparatively inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications canbe resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combination lock in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, with the back plate removed showing theelements 1n position when the lock is closed.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the position of the elements when the lock is open.
Fig. 5 is a section on line V-V, Fig. L1, With the back plate in position.
Fig. V6 is a sectional detail of the casing.
Fig. 7 is a detail of the locking arm.
`Referring to the drawings in detail 1 de'- notes a ca sing having a back plate 2, which is maintained in position by crimping over as at 3, the cylindrical body portion 4., of the casing l. `The front wall 5 of the casing l, has a countersunk opening 6, and formed integral with said frontwall 5, is an inwardly extending annular member `7, having a disk 8, formed integral with its inner end. The member 7, and disk 8, forms a pocket 9, having a series of locking disks, not shown, similar to that set forth in the Letters Patent referred to.
The disk 8, has an opening 10, and is also formed with a radially disposed notch 11, which terminates in the slot 12, formed in the member 7. -The member 7, and disk 8, is constructed in a similar manner to that set forth in the Letters Patent referred to. A like arrangement, as set forth in said Letters Patent, of the locking disks or tumblers are employed.
The body portion 1l, of the casing 1, has a pair of openings, one of which is employed for the short arm 13, of the shackle 14, and the other of which is employed for the longer arm 15, of the shackle 14:. The inner end of the longer arm 15, is cut-away as at 16, to provide a clearance.
Connected to the end arm of the shackle is a locking arm comprising an L-shaped bar 17, which terminates in a ward 18, disposed in a plane at right angles with the plane of the bar 17. The ward 18, is notched as at 19 to provide a clearance. The bar 17, intermediate its ends, has a lateral extension 20, formed with protuberance 21, 22, disposed at right angles with respect to the extension 20, and which are adapted to engage in grooves 23, formed in the arm 15, whereby the locking arm is connected to the elongated arm of the shackle so as to move with the latter when said arm 15 is shifted in an outward direction. The protuberances 21, 22, engage in the grooves 23, in such manner that the arm 15, can rotate on its longitudinal axes without shifting the locking arm.
The upper end of the bar 17 is split as at 24, and bent as at 25 to form a curved lug.
Attached to front wall 5, is an inwardly eXtending pin 26, upon which is mounted, a coiled spring 27, the latter having one end extended, as at 28, and bearing against the inner face of the body portion 4c, and its other end extended as Vat 29, and seated in the split 24, against the luO 25. The spring 27, normally maintains theocking arm clear of the slot 12, of the member 7.
Arranged within the body el, is a lug 30,
` that disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,17 3,348,
pulled outwardly, the arm 15, can-be Y granted to me and it is thought unnecessary to describe same, asthis invention relates to the shackle and locking arm carried thereby.
What I claim is:
1. A combination lock comprising a casing having an inwardly extending lug on its body, a shackle extending into said body and adapted to seat on the lug when the shackle is 'extended and rotated, and a spring controlled locking element connected with the shackle for maintaining the shackle eX- tended when seated on the lug.
2. A combination lock comprising a casing having a lug on its body, a shacklepeX- tending into said body and adapted to have one of its arms seated on the lug when the shackle is extended and rotated, and a spring controlled locking element connected with said arm and maintaining the shackle on the lug, said shackle being cutaway to clear the lug when the shackle is closed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
