LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application filed March 18, 1920. Serial No. 366,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Lienniu in, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State or New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lock for useon doors, trunks and other articles and devices, and arranged to prevent unauthorized persons from pushing the bolt back out of locking position by the insertion and manipulation of thin-bladed tools or other implements.
Another object is to provide a lock which is simple and durable in construction and not liable to get easily. out of order.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claiins.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in theaccompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation or the improved lock inort-ised into a door, the section being on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation or the bolt in shotout position and in engagement with the keeper;
Fig. 4: is a cross section oi. the same on the line 1- 1 of Fig. 3; a
Fig. 5 is a face view of a portion of the keeper;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the bolt;
Fig. 7 is a cross section of the head of the bolt on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a face view of the revoluble locking member for the bolt head;
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the same; and
Fig. 10 is a side elevation of a modified form of the lock applied to the outside of a door, part of the keeper being shown in section. I
The lock illustrated in Figs. 1 to 9 is in the form of a mortised lock having its casing 10 mortised in a door 11 and having a keeper 12 secured to the door casing 13. In the lock casing 10 are arranged guide members 15 on which is mounted to slide a bolt 16, prefer ably key-controlled, in any suitable manner: for instance, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the use of a rollback 17 forming part of a lock 18 mounted on the casing 10 and extending to the outer face of the door, the lock 18 being preferably of the cylinder or pin or other type.
The bolt 16 is provided with a head 20 in the :torm of a short twisted bar having at its inner end a shaft 21 mounted to turn in a bearing 22 formed on the forward end of the bolt 16. The shaft 21 is provided at its rear end w'th a head 23 abutting against the rear face of the bearing 22 to hold the head 20 against lengthwise movement but to allow the bolt to rotate. in the bearing'22; It is understood that the head 20 is in close proximity to the face of thebearing 22 thus preventing rearward sliding movement of the head 20 on the. bolt 16.- The head 20 extends through an opening 24: formed in the face plate 250i the lock casing 10, and the outer end of the head 20 is normally flush with the face plate 25 at the time the bolt 16 is in retracted position. The head 20 is adapted to pass into an opening 26 formed in the keeper 12 and this opening 26 corresponds in shape to the cross sectional area of the head 20, as will; be readily understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 7. When the door 11 is closed and the bolt 16 is shot out then the head 20 passes. into the opening 26 and, as it advances in this opening the head is turned and its front-portion passes into a recess 28 formed in the door casing 13, as plainlv shown in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that asthe head 20 the wall of the opening 26 in the keeper12 it is impossible to re.
tract the bolt 16 by the insertion of a thin bladeiiltool or other implement between the keeper 13 and the face plate 25, as is so ire quently practised by burglars and other unauthorized persons -in jimmying a door. The forward end or" the head 20 is slightly rounded oii, as indicated in Figs. 1, 3 and 6.,
" to insure a proper entering of the bolt head sarin 871 at the time the bolt 16 is moved ring in shape to the keeper opening 26, that is, to the cross sectional area of the bolt head 20. When the bolt 16is advanced and. the head 20 is turned on engaging the opening 26, as above' explained, then the locking member rotates with the head 20, and when the bolt 16 moves into an outermost position then the locking member is locked against rotation thus preventing rotation of the bolt head 20. For the purpose mentioned the inner face of the locking 'meniberSOis provided with radial slots 35, any one oiwhich is adapted to be'engaged the recess 31 to hold the locking member 30 c in position in the recess 31. Vt hen the bolt returns to 1111- i 16 is retracted the spring 37 locking position relative to he locking momber 30 thus allowing the latter torotate with the head 20 of the boltjl6 during the return 7 anovement of the bolt.
The bolt 16 is held against accidental movement when in shot-out or r tracted po- Slt1OIl,LH11Cl for this purpose the bolt l6 is provided on top with a lugl? adapted to be engaged by'eith'er of the rotchesloi or formed 111" a'loclnng lever 53 mounted to swingon a pivot 5% arranged onthe casing 10. A spring presses on the loCkinglever to hold the latter-in engagement with the lug 50. it is understood that when the bolt trolled lock 18. g
is in retracted position the notch 51 en ges the lug 50, and when the bolt 16 is inshotout position then the notch 52 engages the sa d lug 50'to hold'the bolt (50 against acoldental movement when 'in retracted and shot-out position. It is understood that the locking lever 53does not prevent the bolt 16 from being moved into-shot out or retracted position by the rollback 17 of the l{eyconrotation at shown in Fig. 10, then the casing is provided with a cut-out portion 61 into which projects a keeper 62 attached to the door frame 63. The keeper 62 is provided with an opening 64 similar to the opening 26 and engaged by the head 20 of the bolt 16 when the. latter is shot out thus causing the bolt head 20 to rotate as above explained, otherwise the construction is the same as above described so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a lock, a bolt mounted to slide and having a revoluble twisted head, armember having an opening'for the passage of the bolt head the opening corresponding to the cross sectional area of the sa d head to turn the latter on advancing or retracting the bolt and locking means for the said bolt he: d V
and controlled by the said bolt to lock the said head against rotation atthe time-the bolt is shot out; v i
2, In a lock, a bolt mounted to slide and *inga'revoluble head and a'memher having an opening engaged by the said headto turn the latter on advancing or retracting the bolt and its head, a locking member :ro-
toting with the bolt head, and means, controlled oy the bolt and engaging the'sa-id locking member to loclrthe latter against rotation at the time the bolt is shot out.
3. In a look, a key-controlled bolt mounted tosiide, andhaving a' revolnble and twisted.
head, a lceeperhaving an opening adapted to be engaged bythe said bolt head, theopen lug corresponding approximately in shape to the cross sectional area of the saidbolt head, a locking member mounted to turn and harino an opening corresponding inshape J n t a .U o v (H ,3; 1L 1 t0 LIlG cross ltc ional area or'tne bOlb head the latter extending through the opening of he locking member, the said lockinginemjher having iaceslots, a springfixedatone end mid-adapted to engage one of the said slots, and a lug on the bolt and adapted to V engage the sa d sprnig to move the latter" into locking engagement-with a slot oi the locking member to hold the latter against the time the bolt-is shotont. CHARLES LIBERlilAN.
