NATHAN WHIPPLE, OF LEDYARD, CONNECTICUT.

IMPROVEMENT IN CURRV-COMBS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,551, dated October 29, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN WHIPPLE, of Ledyard, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curry Combs, which consists in making any'and all currycombs to which it may be attached self-clearing by removing from the teeth of the same at every stroke when in use all the hair and dirt which are taken off or which stick between the teeth, so that the comb is kept clear from filling between the teeth-While in use, and the teeth are gaged at every stroke to take a deeper or lighter hold, as occasion may require, by a heavier or lighter pressure of the comb when using it; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of my said invention or improvement, viz:

My said invention or improvement consists in fixing to the curry-comb a metallic plate, a, of any suitable thickness, to go over the face of the comb, with slots I) cut through it to admit the several rows of teeth to pass closely but easily through these slots, which plate is attached to the comb, having flanges, and lips turned near the corners, catching over the back of the comb, so as to admit the plate to slide out or in, but not to slide further out than to bring the face of the plate even with the points of the teeth. Between this metalli'c plate and the back of the comb on the inside I insert spiral or other springs, 6, usually at or near each corner, of snflicient power to force the plate out to its full extent, so that its face shall be even with the points of the teeth or nearly so.

In using the comb with this plate so attached the teeth 0 will protrude more or less, according to the pressure upon the plate, and recoil alternately as the pressure is removed, thus forming a gage for a deeper or lighter hold by the teeth, and clearing them at every stroke of the comb and recoil of the plate.

Figure I is a view of a comb, showing the attachment of the metallic plate. Fig. II shows the face of the comb with the plate pressed in and the teeth protruding, as when in use with a pressure upon the comb.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A curry comb having a plate operating against springs in the manner set forth, by which the teeth are gaged to a lighter or deeper hold and alternately cleared by the recoiling of the plate at each stroke when in use, substantially as described.
