Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. Mareh 20, 1919. Serial No. 283,866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LEFEVRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Can-Openers, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to can openers and it consists in the arrangement and combinations hereinafter shown and specified in the claims.

Figure 1 shows the device in position to detach the cover to a can.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the can and device showing it arranged in position preparatory to opening the can.
Fig. 3 is a sectional drawing showing the device arranged in the closed position upon the can cover.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the base of the device attached to the cover.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the connecting device.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of that part of the device which engages the cover.

In the drawings A is the body of a can, B is the cover of the type which is pressed into the can and having-a slight ledge C p which forms a shoulder which engages an internal ring D formed from the body of the can. This is a usual and well known construction of can closures. My deviceconsists in attaching a plate of peculiar construction as shown in Fig. 4 and marked E. This has a base F which is soldered to the cover B when assembled. The end G is raised slightly and a bifurcated plate H is attached thereto either by soldering or any convenient method of riveting or by fern ing it integral with the base. The bifurcated plate H carries a tongue J. Before attaching the plate F to the can cover, as stated, the parts are assembled by inserting the plate F into a perforated plate K through the slot L as shown in Fig. 1, the plate F is then attached to the can cover in the manner specified. The perforated plate 7 K contains another perforation M in which is hinged at N another member P. Punched out of the body of the member P is a tongue R, as shown in section in Fig. 2. In this figure the parts are shown in an operative position. In Fig. 3 they are shown in a closed position. The tongue J has a certain amount of resiliency and acts as a spring.
When the device is in operative position, as I shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the part P is turned over and the lip R having a slight resiliency engages over the ledge C of the cover, then by lifting it in the direction of the dotted line pulls the cover out of its closed position.
As assembled with the cover closed, as shown in Fig. 3, the part P is folded back over the part K which is slid toward the center of the can over the plate F, the slot L permitting such movement until it passes under the tongue J which by virtue of its elasticity holds the part P in position, the tongue J passing through the opening S and under the lip R as the part K carrying the part P is moved under the lip J. When needed for use the perforated plate K is drawn outward disengaging the part P in the position shown in Fig. 2, the part P is 'then drawn over the edge of the can until the tongue R engages the edge of the cover C when the cover can be pulled out of place and the can thereby opened.
What I desire to claim is:

In a can opener permanently attached to a can cover, the combination of a plate fixed to the cover provided with a neck which carries a projecting spring, a slidable member engaging said neck, a lever hinged to the, outer extremity of said slidable me1n her and adapted to fold back onto said slidable member, said lever being provided with a slot to engage the neck of said fixed member when folded back and to be held in such folded position by the spring of said neck, a tongue carried by said lever adapted to engage the edge of the can cover when the lever is unfolded from said slidable member, substantially as described. 10
