ToaZZ "whom it may concermc Be it known that I, EDWARD fl. Borrmc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Ghemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales-Books, of which the following is'a full, clear, and exact description, such, as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app-ertai-ns to make and use the same;v
This invention relates to manifolding devices andwith respect to. its more specific erationof storing the triplicate beneath the r unused portion of the original and duplicate pad, whlle malntaining the practicabiland simplicity of construction of the detachable features of the device.
' Other ob ects Wlll be 111 part obvious and The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement a of parts which will be exemplified in the construction here- 1 inafterset forth, and thescope 0f the apfollowing claims. 1 7

parent, such as would be furnished by tissue sheets, and the assemblage of tissue leaves is backed by a Manila sheet 5. wvlll be noted that the pad 4 is connected to that side or end of the leaf 1 which is the side adjacent the hinge 3, so that the leaves of this pad may be turned upwardly, these leaves, as it were pivoting in the clamp 5.
Another pad or pile of leaves lies on the leaf 1 and is preferably composed of a plurality of superposed original leaves or sections 6 and duplicate leaves or sections 7 connected by weakened lines, as at 8, the
originals being connected together as at 9, and to a sheet 10, by which latter this pad is removably attached to the support composed of theleaves- 1 and 2. Preferably the attaching sheet comprises leaves 11 and 12, of flexible material, as Manila paper,
the leaves being formed from a single sheet adapted to fold so that the pad of original and duplicate leaves may-lie therebetween. In this wise the attaching sheet serves as a flexible cover for the pad. When the pad of original and duplicate leaves is in opera-tive position on the support, one leaf of the cover lies opposite the leaf 1 and the other leaf extends outside the periphery of the pad andlies opposite the support leaf 2, the leaves of the cover being thus, re-
spectively, in superposed relation to those of the support, so that when the support I, leaves are folded to inclose the. pads, a part plication of which WIll be indicated-m the i '13 of the cover serves as a hinge for the cover and to flexibly connect the pad of orig:
inal and duplicate leaves to the support, as will appear. plicate leaves is attached to the leaf, as 11,
The pad of original and duposition for inscription with the leaf 1 bei tween the leaves 6 and 7 Several leaves 14E may be employed at different depths 111 the pile. Tofa'clhtate grasping the next original sheet, the carbon sheets 14 may be reacess das a 1 One end of the pad of original and duplicate leaves lies beside the clamp 5 within the end margin of the supporting leaf 1, so that this pad may be turned laterally on its hinge 13 and thus lifted from the leaf 1, for the reception of the inscribed tissue sheet between the pad of original and duplicate leaves and the leaf 1, where it may remain stored out of the way.
The leaf 12 of the Manila cover is removably attached to the support as by providing a slot in the support to receive the leaf 12. Preferably this slot is disposed longitudinally of the hinge 3 and opens adjacent thereto, as at 15. This slot may be provided by making the leaf 2 of superposed connected sheets 16 and 17 of stiff material, as pasteboard, one longitudinal edge of each of these sheets being unconnected for a portion of their length to form the slot or opening 15. Thus, in the present embodiment,
in the leaf 2 is provided a pocket, accessible through the opening 15 in the wall of the pocket in which pocket the cover leaf 12 may lie and be removably retained and held, the sheets 16 and 17 being close together and preferably slightly gripping the leaf 12. The inner sheet 17 may be of considerable thickness to lessen warping and is constructed to permit access to the face of the leaf 12 while in the pocket having a recess opposite the posit-ion the leaf 12 occupies in the pocket so as to provide an opening 18 through which the face of the Manila leaf 12 may be inscribed with desired memoranda.
For the purpose of facilitating the operation ofthe book, a handle 19 may be provided. This handle may be a tab of strong paper fastened to the Manila leaf 11, preferably on the inner face thereof, so as to be out of the way of the stored triplicate leaves 1, and projecting beyond the periphery of the pad of original and duplicate leaves and the support 1 at the side opposite or remote from the hinged part. If desired, a portion of the supporting leaf 1, opposite which the pad of original and duplicate leaves lies, maybe cut away, as at 20, to faciliate turning said pad in the operation of the device.
In operation, the edge of the Manila leaf 12 is inserted in the slot 15 so as to lie in the pocket formed by the sheets 16 and 17 and opposite the opening 18. The pad of tissue leaves is secured by the clamp 5, the backing 5 being uppermost, the two pads being placed in alinement longitudinally. For inscription, the pad of tissue leaves is thrown back and the then upper leaf is placed between the carbon sheet and the original leaf of the other pad. The inscription is then made on the original leaf and is transferred by the carbon leaf to the tissue leaf and the duplicate leaf. The pad of original and duplicate leaves is then lifted from the supporting leaf 1, and will turn in the cover hinge 13, and this operation will cause the inscribed tissue leaf to be with drawn from between the original and duplicate leaves and assume position between the support and the pad of original. and duplicate leaves. The inscribed original and duplicate leaves may then be detached from the pad and from each other. Any memoranda desired may be made on the Manila leaf 12 through the opening 18, which leaf is maintained in fiat condition by the retaining means. The lifting and turning of the pad of original and duplicate leaves may be readily effected by grasping the tab 19, thus avoiding the necessity for grasping the Dad itself. If the pad were grasped the tissue leaf lying between the original and duplicate leaves might also be grasped, and its displacement resisted. Thus there would be danger of tearing the tissue leaf. Should the tab 19 be not present, as by having been accidentally detachechthe thumb may be engaged beneath the corner adjacent the cut away corner 20 to lift the book, If the book is lying on the table, one hand may grasp the tab 19 and the thumb of the other hand be placed beneath the corner at 20. Haiing stored the triplicate and detached the inscribed leaves, the book may be reset for the next and similar operation by inserting the next tissue leaf between the next original and the carbon sheet.
Thus by the above described construction are accomplished, among others, the objects hereinbefore referred to.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it isintended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawingsshall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetweenr Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent is:
