lE/IANIFOLDING Application filed flctobcr 10, 191?.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. ED\VAI{D Knurr Bor- TLn. a citizen of the l nited States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemu'ng and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll lanifolding Sales-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others iiled in the art to which it appertains to mascuse the same.
This invention relates to manifolding devices and with regard to its more specific features, to manifolding sales books.
An object of tnis invention is to provide a manifolding sales book by which three direct reading opaque paper copies of a record may be made and one reverse record.
A further object of the invention is to provide adevice of the character described which will be simple and economical in-construction and practical and etlicientin manipulation.
@ther objects-will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings. forming part of this specification, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views,
t Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a sales book embodying this invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the arrangement of the leaves.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a pad of record sheets, each sheet being folded upon itself twice to form a bound leaf 2 and an intermediate leaf 3 and an end leaf 4, and the sheet will preferably be folded upon itself in such a way that the end leaf will lie between the intermediate leaf and the bound leaf.
In order to transfer the record made upon the upper or intermediate leaf to the lower leaf of the top record sheet, a transfer sheet 5 will be provided which is preferably bound integrally with the pad 1, which sheet will be folded upon itself to form two superposed a, P. leaves as a bound leaf 6 and a free leaf f and the leaves '8 and 7 will be of such length Specification of Letters Patent.
llatented Feb. 25.. illlllil.
sci-m1. No. 195,682.
and so disposed that the may be interfolded with the leaves 2, 3 and l of the. top record sheet successively, with the leaf 7 of the transfer sheet disposed. between the free leaf l and the intermci'liate leaf 3 and with the bound leaf 6 of the transfer sheet disposed upon the bound leaf 2 of the record sheet.
In order to enabl a quadruplicate record to be made, a second pad. as 9, may be provided and so disposed that its leaves may be T inserted between the leaves of the top record. sheet and between one of the leaves of the record sheet and a surface of the transfer sheet. As illustrated in the drawings. the pads l and 9 are attached respectively to supports 10 and 11, the opposite ends of which supports are hinged together as shown at 12, so that there is provided between the supports 10 and 11, a. receptacle in which those leaves of the pad 9 upon which :1. record has been made may be placed, and in order to enable the boot; to lie flat, the sup port 11 will preferably be sufficiently longer than the support 10, to CH1??? the stub portion of the pad 9 out from under the pad 1, as shown in the drawing.
In order to facilitate the removal of the .upper end of the intermediate leaves 3 min beneath the transfer sheet, a notch 14 may be provided in the lower leaf of the transfer sheet and a notch, as 15, in the. outer or free leaf of the transfer sheet and tl notches will be so disposed as to e corner of the upper of the in leaf 3 when lying the eon.
In order, however, to facilitate the i of the outer or free end of the trans er .i 7, the notch 1- will be deeper than the notch 15 or otherwise so disposed as to leave a portion of the transfer leaf 7 extending out over the notch Ll sons to be able to be readily grasped. In this wise a portion. of the area of the notch of the transfer leaf 5 will be covered by the transfer leaf "2.
The manipulation of the heel: is as follows:
In order to place the book in the position illustrated in the figure, in which it is ready to have an inscription made thereon, the leaves of the pad 9 will be thrown back to expose the pad 1 and the upper edge of the intermediate leaf 3 of the upper record sheet is grasped at the point where it exposed by the notches in the transfer sheet and drawn out from under the sheet.
Thereupon the upper free leaf 7 of the transfer sheet will be lifted; one sheet from the pad 9 is then superposed upon the leaf 5 of the transfer sheet and the free leaf 4 of the record sheet is folded over the free leaf 7 of the transfer sheet. Thereupon the upper sheet of the pad 1 and the transfer sheet are folded together so as to bring the leaf 4 downwardly upon the sheet from the pad '9. The book is then in the position as shown in Fig. 1.
Any inscription which is then made upon the intermediate leaf will be transferred to the leaf 4 by the under face of the leaf 7 0f the transfer sheet and will be transferred to the under face of thesheet from the pad -9 and to the upper face of the leaf 2 by means of the leaf 5 of the transfer sheet. The sheet comprising the leaves 2, 3 and 4 may then be drawn from the book and the sheet from the pad 9 may be' inserted beneath the support 10, whereupon the manipulation may be repeatedlas before described.
Thus by the above construction are ac complished, among others, the objects hereinbefore set forth.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or I shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the lan guage used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the in ven tion which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A manifolding sales book comprising, in combination, a plurality of sheets bound. together along one edge to form a pad, each sheet being folded upon itself twice to form lthree superposed leaves, a transfer sheet bound integrally with said pad folded upon itself to form two superposed leaves, a pad of leaves connected to said first mentioned pad in position to have its leaves interposed etweenthe leaves of the transfer shcct, said transfer leaves being provided with cut-outs whereby portions of the unbound leaves of the top sheet of said first mentioned pad are exposed from beneath both leaves of the transfer sheet.
2. A. manifolding sales book comprising,
. in combination, a plurality of sheets bound together along one edge to form a pad, each sheet being folded upon itself twice to form three superposed leaves, a transfer sheet bound integrally with said pad folded upon itself to form two superposed leaves, a pad of leaves connected to said first mentioned pad in position to have its leaves interposed between the leaves of the transfer sheet, said transfer leaves being provided with cut-outs whereby portions of the unbound leaves of the top sheet of said lirstanentioned pad are exposed from beneath the transfer sheet, the bound leaf of the transfer sheet being cut away more at one point than the free leaf of the transfer sheet whereby the free leaf of the transfer sheet may be readily grasped without grasping the bound leaf.
3. A manifolding sales book comprising. in roml'iination, a plurality of sheets bound together along one edge to form a pad, each of said sheets being folded upon itself to form three superposed leaves, a transfer sheet bound integrally with said pad and folded upon itself to form two superposed leaves adapted to be inserted between the leaves of the top sheet of said pad, a support hinged to said pad at the end thereof opposite the binding, extending out from under the pad at the bound edge of the pad, and a pad of leaves attached to the extended por tion of said support. in position to be inserted. between the leaves of the top sheet of the first mentioned pad.
4. A manifolding sales book comprising, in combination. a pad of supci posed record leaves, and a folded transfer ,shect adapted to lie thereon, each leaf of said sheet being shaped to expose a portion of the uppermost record leaf, when lying in folded connotched to expo e a portion the uppen most record leal, when lying in folded condition thereon, the uppermost leaf of said transfer sheet covering a portion of the area of the notch in the tower transfer leaf.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
