3' M. ALLEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OFONE-I-IALF TO RUDOLPH i LOBSINGER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ALLEN, citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in scissors sharpener-s and has for its primary object a sharpener whereby, not only the scissors blade may be sharpened, but also the heel of the blade. I
In the drawings:
Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the block which holds and guides the scissors blade during the operation of sharpening.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the sharpener.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the base of the sharpener.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the block, which holds and guides the scissors blade, removed from the base block.
Referring to the drawings, 7 indicates the base block, which may be formed of any material and any size, to be supported in the hand in the operation of sharpening or to rest upon a suitable support, if preferred. Along one side of the block 7, I form a channel 8, thereby forming a longitudinal shoulder 9, the
by friction or any suitable mechanical manner, an abrasive or grinding block 11. This abrasive block is formed out of any suitable abrasive material, is rectangular in shape and is of athickness somewhat less than the depth of the recess 10 and extends entirely across the top of the base block 7, both ends of the same and top being exposed.
12 indicates the scissors blade holding and guiding block which is provided with a slot 13, either straight to receive a straight scissors blade or curved to receive a curved scissors blade. This recess or slot 13 extends entirely across the block 12. The block 12 has a depending right angular portion Specification of Letters Patent.
purpose of which is herein" Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed December 26, 1918. Serial No. 268,272.
11 which is adapted to fit into the recess or gular depending portion 14 is provided with an open slot 15 and the body portion of the block 12 isprovided with an open slot 16. The body portion of the block 12 is beveled as at 17.
i In, order to secure and fasten the block 12 onto, the block 7 I employ a headed nail or screw 18 and insert it into the top of the lock 7 and located in the slot 16, and also a headed nail or screw 19 which is inserted into the side of the block 7 and located in the slot 15. By this means the block 12 may be secured to the block 7, so as to permit a free sliding movement of the block 12 on the block 7.
It will be observed that the abrasive or grinding block 11 is of less thickness than the depth of the recess in which it is located, thus forming a slight clearance, as at 20, between the lower surface of the block 12 and the top surface of the abrasive block 11. As previously referred to, it will be observed that the end of the abrasive block 11 is exposed and lies flush with the front face of the block 7, thus permitting the scissors blade to be inserted within the slot 13, so as to grind or sharpen the heel of the blade.
It will be further noted that the bevel 17 on the block 12 will permit the insertion of the scissors blade in the slot 13 sufficiently to grind Or sharpen the heel of the blade. As previously pointed out. it will be observed 7 that not only the end of the abrasive block 11 is exposed as illustrated in Fig. 1, but also of said block so that throughout its entire length, it may be used as a grinding or sharpening surface, thus enabling the sharp ener to grind or sharpen the blades throughout their entire length.
.It will be also observed, that the depth of the slots 15 and 16 regulates the throw movement of the block 12, that is to say, in conjunction with the pins 18 and 19.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. scissors sharpener comprisin a base block provided with a right angular recess forming a longitudinal shoulder, an abrasive block mounted in the top of the base lock and having one end exposed and flush with, the Sirens face e15. the base block, a i i scissors holding block provided with a slot having a vertical and inclined wall to receive the scissors blade and provided with a right angular dependingportion adapted to fit in the recess formed in the base block and with open slots, and headed nails mounted in the top and side of said base block and iocatedin said open slots for slidingiy securing the scissors holding block on the base block. i
2. A scissors sharpener comprising a base block provided with a recess forming a 1011- gitndin a1 shoulder, an abrasive block mounted in the top of the .base block and having one end exposed and flush with the front :face of the base block, a scissors holding block provided with a slot to receive the scissors blade and having its end beveled adjacent said slot and provided with a right angular depending portion adapted to fit in the recess formed in the base block and with open slots, and headed nails mounted in ihe top and side of said base block and located in said open slots for siidingly securing the scissors holding block on the base block. 1
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
