FRIDRIOII W. G. BOETTCHER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED SKATE AND KNIFE SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,723, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed October 16, 189 7.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRIDRICH W. G. Bonrr- CHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Skate and Knife Sharpener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to'a combined skate and knife sharpener; and it consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arran gements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of my improved sharpener. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sharpener arranged within a suitable base or support.
A in the drawings represents myimproved sharpener, which consists, preferably, of a metallic frame composed of a longitudinally-' extending U-shaped piece 00, having side extensions a a, forming strengthening-ribs. A round, elliptical, or other suitably-shaped file B is journaled or otherwise suitably secured, preferably so as to rotate, between the downframe. The file, which is preferably made cylindrical in cross-section, is formed on its ends concentrically of the same with slight depressions 1), into which the ends of screws 0 rest, which screws whentightened up prevent the file from revolving, but which when present a new sharpening-surface.
To the frame A at both ends are secured guides D, which extend the entire length of the machine and upwardly alongside the roller on both sides to form knife-guides, as shown at d, and downwardly to form a skateguide, as at cl, below the file-roller. It will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 that a V- guide for a knife is formed on opposite sides of the file-roller and that to sharpen the knife it is simply necessary to pass the knife several times through the right-hand guide and then pass it through several times the left-hand guide, when the knife will be found to be perfectly sharpened. It will also be seen that a rough emery surface 9 Serial No. 655,415. (No model.)
a perfect skate-guide is formed below the fileroller, and by passing the runner of a skate through the same, as shown in Fig. 1, the skate will be readily sharpened.
The forming of a combined knifeand skate guide in one structure I regard as an important feature of my invention. The guides can be drawn toward each other or separated more or less by means of a screw F, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the sharpener supported in a base This base Will be found convenient for holding the machine when a knife is being sharpened. The base is provided with a longitudinal slot g, into which the lower or skate-guide portion is inserted, which will steadily holdthe sharpener in an upright position and permit a knife to be drawn back and forth through the same. The top surface of the base on one side of the slot is covered with a fine emery surface g and on the other side of the slot is covered with These emery surfaces will be found very convenient for putting a fine edge on a knife after it has been brought toa proper edge on the file-roller.
The sharpener will be found very convenient for household purposes, being very simple in constructionand can be manufactured at a slight cost.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its construction a suitable frame, a file-roller secured in the same, and a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller so that one portion of the guide will serve to directthe movement of a knife along the file-roller and another portion of said guide will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller while said knife and skate are being sharpened, substantially as described.
2. Acombined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its, construction a suitable frame, a file-roller journaled in the same and capable of rotation, and a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller so that one portion of the guide will serve to direct the movement of a knife along the file roller and another portion of said guide will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller While said knife and skate are being sharpened, substantially as described.
3. A combined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its construction a suitable frame, a file-roller secured in the same, and a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller and capable of lateral adjustment so that one portion of the guide will serve to direct the movement of a knife along the file-rollerand another portion of said guide will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller While said knife and skate are being sharpened, substantially as described.
4. A combined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its construction a suitable frame, a file-roller journaled in the same and capable of rotation, and a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller and capable of lateral adjustment so that one portion of the guide will serve to direct the movement of a knife along the file roller and another portion of said guide will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller While said knife and skate are beingsharpened, substantially as described.
5. A combined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its construction a suitable frame, a file-roller secured in the same, a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller so that one portion of the guide will serve to direct the movement of a knife along, the file-roller and another portion of said guide Will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller While said knife and skate are being sharpened, a base provided with a longitudinal slot for engaging the skate guides and thereby holding the knife-sharpener in an upright position, and sharpening-surfaces on said base, substantially as described.
6. A combined skate and knife sharpener comprising in its construction a frame, comprising a longitudinally-arranged U-shaped portion, a file roller journaled in the same and capable of rotation, means for securing the file-roller against rotation, and a combined knife and skate guide secured to said frame adjacent to the file-roller and capable of lateral adjustment so that one portion of the guide will serve to direct the movement of a knife along the file roller and another portion of said guide will serve to direct the movement of a skate over said roller While said knife and skate are being sharpened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
