Description

M. J. KISSEL.
BOOKMARK. APPLICATION FILED JULY3I, |919.
LSQZQ., M Riten@ N0v.25f, w19.
fr 4 f" W//VE 535s i f MICHAEL J. KISSEL, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY,
BOOKMARK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, LQQ.
Application filed July 31, 1919. Serial No. 314,484.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. Kissen, a citizen of CZecho-Slovakia, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookmarks, of which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in book marks and has `for its principal object the construction of a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be applied to various types of books.
A further object of the invention is the construction of a device of this character in such a manner that it may be used with books of various len hs or thicknesses.
A still further object resides in the pro vision of means whereby the mark may be either permanently connected to the book cover or loosely inserted so that it may be removed at' will.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following specication and drawings in which,
Figure l is a perspective showing my book mark applied to the book.
F ig. 2 is a perspective detail showing my book mark permanently connected to a book` mark.
In the drawings the numeral l indicates a book cover of usual construction having the curved back portion 2, and 3 indicates the book leaves. The parts so far described are the usual features ofa book of ordinary construction and form no part of the present invention.
My invention comprises a plate or body portion 4 which is adapted to be inserted between the curved portion 2 of the book cover and the ends of the leaves 3, as more particularly illustrated in F igs. l and 2 of the drawings. This body portion or plate 4 is preferably constructed of paper although it might equally as well be made of rubber, Celluloid or like material. The material strip is preferably coated with glue or other adhesive so that when the strip is folded the two leaves will adhere together. -Although l have described the body or plato 4 as being formed of a single strip ot' material it will be 'understood that it could equally as well be formed of two strips which could be glued together as above described.
Tapes 7 are adapted to have one of their ends inserted between the leaves of the plate or body 4 and will be held therein by the adhesive which connects the leaves 5 and 6 of the body 4 together. The opposite ends of the tape 7 are provided with the tip 8 which may be of metal, rubber, or other suitable material. The tape 7 may be of any desired lenvth and the same is also true'relative to the body portion or plate 4. The body portion or plate 4 is of flexible material so that it will conform to the curvature of the book cover or binding as illustrated in Fi 2 of the drawings.
ne face of the body or plate 4 is coated with an adhesive 9 as more clearly illustrated in F ig. 3 of the drawings. While this is the preferable form of the mark it will be understood, if desired, l might do away with the adhesive without departing from the scope of the invention.
From the above detailed description it is thought that the mode of construction and the use of the mark will be clearly understood. When it is desired to use the book mark the body portion or plate 4 is inserted between 'the edges of the leaves 3 and the curved portion 2 of the cover l as is more clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. rlhe tapes 7 are placed between the leaves desired and the tip 8 will extend beyond the edges of the leaves so 'that the tapes may be readily seen and grasped when it is desired to open the book. By this construction it will be seen that the body portion or plate ice flexible material so that it may conform to the curved portion 2 of the Cover. This is Clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
From the above it will be seen that I. have yprovided a book mark which is very simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be either permanently connected to the book Cover or inserted in such a manner that it may be readily removed. At' the same time it will be seen that I have provided a book mark which may beso adjusted as to adapt it for books of different sizes.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangemegit and Combination Of parts,
materials, dimensions. ete., as may prove .expedient and fall wlthin the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention I what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A book mark comprising a plate constructed of a single piece' of material folded upon itself, means for connecting the folded portions together, and tapes secured to theV plate. the ends of said tapes being received between the folded portions of the plate.
2. A book mark. comprising a flexible lplate formed of a single strip of material in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL J. KISSEL.
