Be it known that I, CHARLES I-I. CnowELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Sealed-Container Tape-Packages, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.

This invention relates especially to packages of gummed tape which may be formed of any suitable material and inclose the roll or other supply of gummed tape and protect the same from atmospheric influences as by being substantially hermetically sealed for shipping and for delivering the tape for use, that is, while the strip of gummed tape is being withdrawn from the container from time to time in such lengths as are required. The container may be cheaply and advantageously nade of paper in the form of a paper or pasteboard box having sides preferably closely adjacent the tape roll and carrying a supporting device or pintle on which the tape roll is preferably loosely and rotatably mounted. rIhe container is preferably so arranged as to provide an elongated constricted tape delivery passage through which the tape passes during delivery and this delivery passage is maintained substantially closed by resilient closing devices orV members arranged in cooperation therewith, so that under delivery or service conditions there is no substantial danger that moisture or atmospheric inluences can injure the gummed tape which may thus be provided with hygroscopic moisture containing gummed coatings which is so desirable to insure strong and reliable adhesion to glass, tin, etc. The free end of the strip of gummed paper or cloth tape from the roll preferably protrudes through the delivery passage under shipping conditions and is preferably then provided or arranged with a reinforced nonadhesive end engaging the delivery passage so that there is minimum danger of stickin'g thereto. For this purpose the tape end may be doubled back upon itself to bring its gummed surfaces into contact and thus form a doubled reinforcing protruding tape end extending through the delivery passage and preferably having its protruding end doubled back to form a doubled back loop above the delivery passage. The protruding tape end is preferably fastened on the outside of the container as by an adhesive closing strip which may extend more or less around the edges of the container and if necessary or desirable another special sealing sheet or layer of impervious or water resisting material may be applied to the container adjacent the discharge passage so that the inclosed tape is still further protected under shipping conditions. By severing or tearing the sealing and closing devices adjacent the delivery opening the protruding tape end may be released and pulled out so as to start the regular delivery of the tape from the package.

The container inclosing the roll or other supply of gummed tape may be formed of any suitable material, thick paper or pasteboard being a cheap and suitable material which can be conveniently formed by paper box making methods and machinery into a container which may have sides, such as l, adjacent the sides of the tape roll, if desired, while the edge fil-aps 3 which may be scored or folded may, as indicated, extend around the periphery of the roll. It is de` sirable to reinforce these edge flaps in this construction which may be conveniently effected by the use of a reinforcing connector strip, such as 2, which as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may extend around the inside of the container and be conveniently adhesively secured to the edge flaps except that the end of this strip 25 adjacent the delivery opening is preferably left ungummed so that it may form a closing lip which can spring up and resiliently close the delivery opening under service conditions.

In assembling the container where the supply of tape is in the form of a roll 4 of gummed cloth or preferably gummed paper, a tape support or pintle 5 may be fil secured to the side member 1 as by t-he use of the headed nails 6 or the like, and the tape roll then slipped over the pintle so as to be preferably somewhat loosely and revolubly mounted thereon. v`While, of cour e, the pintle may be of any suitable size it may advantageously be made large enough as indicated to fit within a hole in the roll of tape without the use of the ordinary wood core or center and under these conditions it is usually desirable to interpose a suitable spacer or brushing of any desired material to prevent binding when the tape roll is un` wound and a bushing 7 of heavy cardboard or the like preferably having abutting ends 8 may be slipped within the annular space between the pintle and tape roll as indicated in F ig. 1 so as to insure the yielding revoluble mounting of the tape roll within the container. lVhen the tape roll has been put in place in one-half of the container and preferably while the gummed or other adhesive coating on the reinforcing strip is still wet, the cooperating container side 8 having similarly scored and bent edge flaps 9 is put in place after the end of the tape from the roll has been drawn out through the delivery passage and the edge flaps v9 then forced down into adhesive contact with the reinforcing strip which may of course be done manually or in suitable box making devices or machines of automatic or semi-automatic character. The pintle is preferably also secured to the container side 8 as by similar nails or otherwise so as to more securely support the pintle and roll. lt is desirable to have the periphery of the roll closely ad jacent the inner sides of the container, a clearance of a 16th of an inch or a little more being usually suflicient to insure proper rot-ation of the roll when the tape is first d 1awn therefrom. Vith such relatively small clearance the package is more durable under shipping conditions, since when its edges are subjected to impact or pressure in directions normal to their surfaces, the pa per sides and other parts of the container can readily yield sufficiently so that the edge portions come into Contact with and bear direct-ly upon the tape roll and thus minimize displacement or tearing loose of the pintle or supporting device and consequent break age or injury to the sealed condition of the package.

3 and 9 are also preferably severed transversely so that their edges 38, Si) may be vertically displaced to form a delivery opening 21 between them, preferably at some distance out of line with the tape aperture l1 so that in this Way a constricted tape delivery passage is formed in the container which may in some cases be still more elongated than illustrated to still further minimize access of air or moisture to the interior of the package under service conditions. lt is desirable to secure together the edge flaps adjacent this delivery passage and this may be effected in any suitable way by having these edge flaps arranged with their edges in abutting relation and adhesively securing them by a suitable superimposed binding .sti-ip, such as 17. In this way, as indicated in Fig. Al, the portion 18 of the edge flaps may be readily and permanently secured to the end portion 35 of the reinforcing strip as previously described and the forwardly extending portions 19 of these edge flaps are secured together and are free from the rearwardly extending' end 25 of the reinforcing strip below, which forms a resilient closing lip for the delivery passage. rllhis closing lip 25 in some cases may be advantageously coated on its upper surface with a relatively non-adhesive or water-repellent coating, such as a waxy varnish coating or paraffin, which is lightly applied and forced into the body of this closing lip so as not to undesirably affect the water-absorbent or adhesive properties of the gummed strip drawn over the same and beneath the more or less resilient cover ilap formed by the connected edge flaps 19 above. lf desired, the delivery opening in the container may be further protected in some cases by the use of a closing fla-p, such as 20 which may be formed of any suitable material of a still more resilient character, such as fiber board, heavy pasteboard or even metal, in some instances, secured in position above the cover flap as by suitable staples and by glue or other adhesive connecting material in the case of the paper or fibrous material which may advantageously be used for this closing flap. The thickness and degree of separation of the different parts and layers of material is of course greatly exaggerated in F l for the sake of clearness and it is understood that ordinary gummed tape would be very much thinner and the delivery passage correspondingly more constricted and the cover and closing flaps or members would more closely engage the cooperating parts so as to still more effectively close this delivery passage under service conditions which is desirable to minimize any substantial or injurious access of moisture to the interior of the package. It is desirable to provide a suitable tape guide adjacent the tape aperture l1 and for this purpose a fixed or rotating guide, such as 13,

may be mounted w-ithin the container so that the strips 23 of tape from the tape roll may pass around this guide before entering the tape aperture 41.

Under shipping conditions it is desirable to have the tape end which protrudes through the delivery passage and is preferably detachably fastened to the package or edge of the container adjacent thereto, given a suitably reinforced or nolradhesive character or both, so that in first withdrawing tape from the package there is less liability of the tape breaking in the delivery passage or adjacent thereto. For this purpose, it is desirable to double back the end of the tape upon itself so as to bring its gummed surfaces into contact and the free end 24 of the tape 23 from the roll may, if desired, be gummed to the adjacent gnmmed surface of the tape between the tape roll and the tape guide or delivery passage, so that the tape end 26 protrudingfrom the passage and in Contact therewith is reinforced by 'being doubled and also has its exposed sides non-adherent so that the possibility of sticking is thereby minimized. It is desirable to double back the protruding end of the tape as by folding the same at about the point 28 in Fig. 4 so that the doubled back loop 29 may, for example, extend back over the delivery passage or adjacent thereto and have its end 30 releasably held in position on the outside of the container. This may be conveniently effected by the use of a suitable closing strip which may be in the form of an adhesive strip or tape of paper or the like, which if desired may have its outer surface coated with impervious material such as a light varnish coating more or less impregnating the paper to still further prevent undesirable access of moisture to the inside of the container. This closing strip 10 may have its end 34 pasted on the edge of the container so as to still further close the seam between the abutting edge fiaps and 9 which may extend across the attached reinforcing strip 2 to varying distances from the two sides of the container as in dicated in Fig. 2, or preferably be of the same width so as to form a centrally located seam 43 as indicated in Fig. 3. This closing strip may as indicated extend entirely around the edge of the container so as to seal this edge seam and adhesively secure the doubled 'back tape loop in position, the end 12 of the closing strip preferably somewhat overlapping its other end for added strength and sealing action. If desired also? a still further sealing or hermetic closing of the delivery opening and passage of the container may be insured by the use of a supplemental sealingl sheet or layer, such as 15, applied thereto as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, and if desired this may be a paraiined sheet or layer of paranor other im-` pervious coating which in the case of paralin may be conveniently applied in hot or liquid condition so as to quickly harden and hermetically seal this part of the tape package.

In releasing the protruding tape end when the tape package is ready for use and is, for instance, mounted in a suitable tape moistening and severing machine or device, it is desirable to have suitable indications which may comprise weakened lines or lines of severance on the outer or closing strips or layers of the package adjacent the delivery opening. For example, one such more or less perforated or weakened line of severance 14 may be provided in the closing strip or sealing layer, or both, and if desired the legend or indication First cut here may be used in connection therewith so that the operator will thus first cut or otherwise sever the closing strip at about this point and then as indicated by the further legend pull up this closing strip and the attached doubled back lip 29 into about the dotted position indicated in Fig. 4 and then finally cut or otherwise sever the closing strip at the weakened or other line ofvseverance 11. The protruding tape end is thus entirely released from the closing strip or devices and can be pulled out so that the special reinforced or non-adhesive end of the tape is withdrawn from the package and the regular gummed tape then withdrawn from the tape roll or other supply within in the amounts required from rtime to time. In this way gummed tape of practically any character may be shipped and stored without danger, even when the atmospheric conditions are so moist and unfavorable as to spoil or seriously injure even ordinary gummed tape and it is thus possible to use the moisture containing and moisture absor ing gummed coatings necessary for some classes of' work and which absorb. moisture so readily as to stick and spoil or dry out when exposed to the air under practically any but the most favorable conditions. lt is of course understood that the outside of such container may be used for suitable advertising matter which is desirable where' the container is exposed in the tape delivering or moistening machine under conditions of service in stores or the like. It isk of course not necessary in all cases that the delivery package be of the exact position or relative length indicated and in many cases it is not necessary that a special closing flap, such as 20, should be used, since as indicated in Fig. 5, this closing flap may be omitted and the closing strip 10 may in such casebe used to secure together the portions 19 of the edge flaps which extend for some distance back of the severed portions 39 at the delivery opening 21. In this way the cover strip may be pasted over.' these portions of iso the edge flaps so as to effectively secure together their abutting portions and the cover strip may then extend around the edges of the container and firmly but releasably secure in position the protruding end of the gummed tape from the roll, which may be doubled back upon-itself, if desired. This n protruding looped end may thus be held on the edge of the package adjacent the delivery opening which may thus beeffectively sealed under shipping conditions in connection, if desired, with the supplemental sealing sheet or layer 15.

This invention has been described in connection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions, sizes, parts, materials, arrangements and methods of preparation and use, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a delivery opening, a roll of gummed tape rotatably mounted in said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll being dou-bled back upon itself to bring its gummed surfaces into contact and form a double reinforced protruding tape end extending through said delivery opening, a closing strip extending around the edges of said container and adhesively secured thereto and to the tape end to form a seal for said container under shipping conditions, and allow said seal to be broken and the tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

2. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a delivery opening, a roll of gummed tape rotatably mounted in said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll extending through said delivery opening, a closing strip extending over said delivery opening of said container and adhesively secured over said delivery opening to the tape end to form a seal for said container under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

3. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a delivery opening, a supporting pintle secured to the sides of said container, a roll of hydroscopio gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle and having its periphery extending` close to the inside edges of said container to have slight clearance therefrom under shipping conditions, a pasteboard spaced bushing loosely arranged between said pintle and tape roll, and means to substantially seal said container under shipping conditions and allow said tape to be withdrawn through said delivery opening under service condi tions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

4. The shipping and delivery gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a delivery opening, a supporting pintle within said container, a roll of gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle, a spacer bushing loosely arranged between said pintle and tape roll, and means to substantially seal said container under shipping conditions and allow said tape to .be withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

5. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a delivery opening, a supporting pintle within said container, a roll of gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle and means to substantially seal said container under shippino` conditions and allow said tape to be Withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

6. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container having sides provided with integral edge flaps formed with a delivery opening, a heavy pasteboard reinforcing strip adhesively secured to the inner surfaces of said edge iiaps and formed with a tape a erture and with a resilient closing lip adjacent ythereto and overlapping means adhesively securing together said edge flaps outside of said tape aperture to form a cover flap therefor and provide an elongated constricted resiliently closed tape delivery passage between said tape aperture and said delivery opening, a pasteboard closing flap having a resilient free end extending beyond' said delivery opening to engage tape issuing therefrom, a supporting pintle secured to said sides, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle, the end of the tape from said tape roll extending through said delivery passage and forming a protruding tape end, and a closing strip extending around the edges of said container and adhesively sesured thereto and to said tape end to form a seal for said container under shipping conditions and allow said seal adjacent said tape end to be broken and the tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

7. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container having sides provided with integral edge flaps formed with a delivery opening, a pasteboard reinforcing strip adhesively secured to the inner surfaces of said edge iaps and formed with a tape aperture and with a resilient closing lip adjacent thereto to form a cover flap therefor and provide an elongated constricted resiliently closed tape delivery opening, a supportingpintle secured to said sides, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle, the end of the tape from said tape roll extending through said delivery passage and Jforming a protruding tape end, and a closing strip extending around the edges of said container and adhesively secured thereto and to said tape end, to form a seal for said container under shipping conditions to allow said seal adjacent said tape end to be broken and the tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

8. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container having sides provided with integral edge flaps formed with a delivery opening, a reinforcing strip adhesively secured to said edge flaps and formed with a tape aperture and with a resilient closing lip adjacent thereto and means adhesively securing toether said edOe fla s to form an elongatedL constricted resiliently closed tape delivery passage and a supply of gummed tape within said container. 1

9. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising apaper container having sides provided with integral edge flaps ormed with a delivery opening, a reinforcing strip adhesively secured to said edge flaps and formed with a tape aperture and means securing together said edge flaps to form an elongated delivery passage and a supply of gummed tape within said container.

10. rlhe shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with an elongated constricted delivery passage, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, a withdrawing device connected to the tape from said tape roll and extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal extending around the edges of said container and adhesively secured thereto to form a hermetic seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow the tape to be withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

11. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a constricted delivery passage, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape rotatably mounted withn said container, a withdrawing device connected to the tape from said tape roll and extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal to form a her metic seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow the tape to be withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a constricted delivery passage, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, a withdrawing device connected to the tape from said tape roll and extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal to form a seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow the tape to be withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

13. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a constricted delivery passage, a roll of gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, a withdrawing device connected to the tape from said tape roll and extending through said delivery passage, to allow the tape to be withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions.

14. T he shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a delivery opening, a pasteboard closing Hap having a resilient free end extending beyond said delivery opening to engage ltape issuing therefrom, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted within said container and having its periphery extending close to the inside edges of said container to have slight clearance therefrom under shipping conditions, the end of the tape from said tape roll protruding from said delivery opening and being doubled back upon itself to bring its gummed surfaces into Contact and form a doubled reinforced tape end, and a closing device extending around the edges of said container and adhesively secured thereto and to said tape end to form a hermetic seal for said delivery opening under shipping conditions and allowthe tape end to be released and withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a delivery opening, a closing iap extending beyond said delivery opening to engage tapeissuing therefrom, a roll or" hydroscopic gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll protruding from said delivery opening, and a closing device to form a hermetic seal for said delivery opening under shipping conditions and allow the tape end to be withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions While said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

16. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a delivery opening, a roll of gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll protruding from said delivery opening, and a closing device to form a seal for said delivery opening under shipping conditions and allow the tape to be withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

17. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a delivery opening, a roll of gummed tape rotatably mounted within said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll protruding from said delivery opening, and allowing the tape end to be withdrawn through said delivery opening under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

18. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with constricted tape delivery passage, a supply of hydroscopic gummed tape within said container, the end of the tape from said tape supply being doubled back upon itself to bring its gummed surfaces into contact and form a double reinforced protruding tape end extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal adhesively secured to said container and to said tape end to form a hermetic seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

19. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a paper container formed with a constricted tape delivery passage, a supply of hydroscopic gummed tape within said container, the end of the tape from said tape supply forming a protruding tape end extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal to form a seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions While said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition. f

20. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with constricted tape delivery passage, a supply of gummed tape within said container, the end of the tape from said tape supply forming protruding tape end extending through said delivery passage and a closing seal to form a seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

21. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising| a paper container formed with a constricted tape delivery passage, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape revolubly arranged within said container, the end of the tape from said tape supply forming a protruding tape end extending through said delivery passage, and a closing seal to form a seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially closed condition.

22. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with constricted tape delivery passage, a roll of gummed tape revolubly arranged within said container, the end of the tape from said tape supply forming a protruding tape end extending through said delivery passage and a closing seal to form a seal for said delivery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal to be broken and the tape withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

23. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with an elongated constricted resiliently closed tape delivering passage, a closing liap having a resilient free end extending beyond said delivery passage to engage tape issuing therefrom, a supporting pintle within said container, a roll of hydroscopic gummed tape loosely and rotatably mounted on said pintle, the end of the tape from said tape roll being doubled back upon itself to bring its gummed surfaces into contact and form a doubled reinforced protruding tape and extending through said delivery passage, and a closing strip extending around the edges of said container and adhesively secured thereto and to said tape end to form a hermetic seal for said container under shipping conditions and allow said seal adjacent said tape end to be broken andthe tape end released and withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions while said container is maintained in substantially sealed condition.

24. The shipping and delivering gummed tape package comprising a container formed with a eonstricted tape delivery passage, a roll of hydroseopic gunnned tape loosely and rotatably mounted in said container, the end of the tape from said tape roll being arranged to form a protruding tape and eX- tending' through said delivery passage, and a closing strip adhesively secured to said tape end to form a hermetic seal for said de- 10 livery passage under shipping conditions and allow said seal adjacent said tape end to be broken and the tape end released and Withdrawn through said delivery passage under service conditions While said container is maintained in substantially sealed condi- 15 tion.
