This invention relates to 'packaging' and more particularly to a lpackage-or carton especially suitable for packaging and dispensing continuous strips or webs of materials as surgical dressings. One of the objects oi this invention is to provide an improved dustproof carton of this' type, that is, preferably one that will retain the contents free from dust and other foreign matter, maintain sterile contents in such condition until the `carton is opened, facilitate dispensing 4 Claims. (Cl. 20G-59) the contents, and thereafter maintain the undispensed contents substantially free from dirt and contamination.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be observed that this invention has been illustrated in the form of a carton particularly suitable for packaging and dispensing a roll of surgical gauze. For this purpose, the carton indicated generally by the reference character I is rectangular in shape and of suitable internal dimensions to receive the desired size of roll of gauze 2.

In general, the carton comprises side, or front vand rear walls 3 and 5 which terminate at one end in the usual bottom ilaps (not shown) and end walls 'I and 8 which also terminate in the usual bottom flaps (not shown). The bottom flaps are turned inwardly, overlapped and glued as is customary in packages of this type to seal the bottom of the carton.

The end walls 'I and 8 terminate at their other ends (the top) in end flaps 9 and I0 of such lengths sov that when folded inwardly toward each other they leave a slot II through which the discharge end of the gauze may be threaded The top flap I3 is provided with an extending 65 tongue Il which is folded under one end of the side ilap I2 when the carton is closed. The discharged end' I5 of the roll of gauze is stapled as at I6 or otherwise fastened to the free end of this underturned tongue I 4 so as to cause the gauze to be withdrawn with the tongue. To facilitate removal of the tongue and withdrawal of the,

gauze, the upper flap I3 is provided with score lines I1 or isotherwise weakened to provide a tear out portion I8.

When it is desired to withdraw or dispense gauze from the sealed carton, it is only necessary to break out the portion I8 along the scored lines I'I and pull this portion outwardly. This will withdraw the desired portion of the gauze or other material which has been secured to thev inturned tongue I4 through the slot II and between flaps Il) and I2. The desired portion or length of gauze may thenl be cut oi leaving a sutlicient end of gauze to grasp when more material is desired.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that there has been provided a carton which is substantially dust and dirt proof, which will retain the contents in sterilized condition until the carton has been opened and which provides for ready removal and dispensing of the contents of the package when desired without exposing more than a minimum of the contents at any time. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that minor variations may be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit'and scope of this invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

l. A carton for containing and.dispensing a continuous strip of material contained therein, said carton comprising side and end walls terminating at one end in bottom flaps secured together` to close the bottom of the carton, said end walls terminating at their other ends ina pair of top end aps folded toward each other and being of such lengths that when so folded they provide a slot for the passage of said material, said side walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of overlapping top side flaps, and a tongue formed as an integral part of and ,detachable from said one of said side flaps, said tongue being secured to the discharge end of said material whereby said material' may be dispensed by detaching and withdrawing said tongue.

A carton for containing and dispensing a continuous strip of material contained therein, said carton comprising A side and end walls terminating at one of their ends in bottom flaps secured together to close the bottom of the carton, said end walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of top end flaps folded toward each other and being of such lengths that when so folded they provide a slot for the passage of said material, said side walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of overlapping top side naps, and a tongue formed as an integral part of and detachable from the outermost of said top side flaps, said tongue being secured to the discharge end of said material whereby said material may be dispensed by detaching and withdrawing said tongue. V

A carton for containing and dispensing a continuous strip of material contained therein, saidcarton comprising side and end walls ter` minating at one of their ends in bottom aps secured together to close the bottom of the carton, said end walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of top end flaps folded toward each other and being of such lengths that when so folded they provide a slot for the passage of said material, said side walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of overlapping top side flaps, and a tongue formed as an integral part of and detachable from the outermost of said top side aps, said tongue extending beneath the lowermost`of said top side flaps and being secured to the discharge end of said material whereby said e 4 material may be dispensed by detaching and withdrawing said tongue.

4. A carton for containing and dispensing a continuous strip of material contained therein. said carton comprising side and end walls terminating at one of their ends in bottom flaps secured together to close the bottom of said carton, said end walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of top end flaps folded toward each other and being of such lengths that when so folded they provide a slot for the passage of said material, said side walls terminating at their other ends in a pair of overlapping top side flaps, a tongue extending from the outermost of said top side naps, said tongue being secured to the discharge end of said material, and lines of weakness in said outermost top side flap facilitating detachment of said tongue whereby said material may be dispensed by detaching and withdrawing said tongue.
