GAS-HEATER FOR AUTOMOBILES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, CHARLEY Mormon STUDEBAKER, a citizen of the United States. and a. resident of Centropolis, county of Franklin, and State of Hand 1 ive invent ed certain new and useful m. ovoinents in Gas-Heaters for Automobile, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to gas heaters, and more particularly to an attachment for automobiles to assist in starting in cold weather, n1y. object being the provision of a simple, inexpensive arrangement which may :be quickly applied, and which may "be utilized without inconvenience and Will effectively and eiliciently open ate for the intended purposes.

More particularly my invention relates to that. type of heater in which a casing is secured to surround a portion of the intake manifold of a combustion engine, having provision for'the ready introduction of comloustible matter as well as provision for the introduction of the heat units and products of combustion-thereof into the air intake pipe of th carburetor, so to actually introduce preheated gases within the combus- 'tible mixture for the motor as Well as heat the intake manifold through which the com- 2 c bustible mixture passes from the carburetor to the motor.

Referring now to these figures, my invention resides in the provision of a casing generally indicated at 10, in connection with the intake manifold 11 of an internal combustion motor, this casing having its base 12 apertured to receive the vertically extending portion of the manifold and provided with" side walls 13 inclined upwardly and out.

A back plate 15 is connected to the rear edges of the sides 13 and has its upper portion 16 curved to partially surround the manifold so as to cooperate with the upper curved portion 17 of the front wall or cover 18, the upper curved portion 17 of which partially surrounds the opposit side of the manifold clearly seen in F igj 1. This front wall or cover plate engages the front edgesof therbase 1-2 and sides-13 and is secured in its operative position to the casingv 'by means of bolts and nuts 19 as seen in Fig 1. no side wall 13 has an opening communicating with the upper end of a depending box-like extension 20 of the casing, the upper end of wh1ch1s secured to the casing around the said opening of its Side wall,
and one side of which-has an opening 21 normally closed by a hinged cover 22. This extension 20 of the casing also has a hinged base plate normally closing its lower- 'door or cover in the open position. shown in Fig. 1, so that -11p0n igniting said combustible material the heat of its combustion will be transmitted directly to the intake manifold with which it is in contact.
At the same time the casing cover 18 has an opening communicating with one end of a heating pipe 27, which is preferably of a flexible nature, having a valve 28 therein at a convenient point in its length and having its opposite end secured to surround an opening in the air intake pipe 29 of the can buretcr 30, which carburcter also connects with the intake manifold as usual. In thus connecting the pipe 27 with the air intake pipe, the respective end of the pipe 27 has an annular series of longitudinal slits forming tongues 31 as seen in Fig. 4, certain of which, for instancealternatc tongues, are bent outwardly to bear upon the external surface of pipe 29, and the others of which are permitted to extend inwardly of the Patented.
