AIR HEATER.
Application filed February 24, 1921. Serial No. 447,611.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. OLsniv, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marshalltown. in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for application to an explosion engine of the type used in connection with automobiles, tractors and similar motor actuated vehicles. as a means of supplying heated air to the explosive mixture under conditions controllable by the operatonand in quantities adapted to the load, as a means of increasing the eiiiciency of the engine and insuring a complete combustion and hence an economy in the use of the fuel; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings. wherein 4 Figure 1 is a side view of an apparatus embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a motor.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
The device consists essentially of a heater 10 of substantially hook shape in cross section adapted to fit over and be suspended upon and in contart with the exhaust manifold ll of the motor indicated at 12. said heater having a reduced air inlet 3 and being contracted. or reduced in area toward its lower end as shown at 14 and in communication with a nozzle 15 tapping the inlet manifold 16 and provided with a regulating valve 17 from which extends an operating rod 18 adapted to be extended to a position within convenient reach of theoperator of the engine or the driver of the car or vehicle. said inlet manifold as in the ordinary construction being in communication with the carburetor indicated at 19.
The heater is provided with longitudinally extended cars 20 for engagement by the clamps 21 which are used to secure the inlet manifold and other parts of the structure in proper relation.
An apparatus such as described will serve to furnish fresh heated air in the desired quantities proportionate to the intake of fuel frr'nn the carbureter to increase the efliciency of the explosive mixture. and may be applied to a motor now in use without necessitating any modification in the construction or arrangement thereof other than to tap the wall of the intake manifold for the reception of the threaded extremity 22 of the nozzle l5.the weight of the heat chamber being supported directly by the exhaust manit'old over which it is engaged as indicated in Figure 2. Obviously vibration of the attachment will be prevented by the engage ment of the clamps 21 with the ears 20 which are disposed in contact with the wall or surface of the exhaust manifold or any convenient portion of the structure.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An apparatus for the purpose described consisting of a heat chamber of cross sectionally hook sha e for supporting engagement with an exhaust manifold and adapted for contact with the wall thereof, said chambcr being provided with a reduced air in take port and a valved nozzle in communication with ihe intake manifold of the engine, said heal; chamber having a longitudinally extended transversely arched upper portion and being reduced in area. toward its point of communication with said nozzle.
2. An apparatus for the purpose described consisting of a heat chamber of cross sectionally hook shape for supporting engagement with an exhaust manifold and adapted for contact with the wall thereof, said chamber being provided with lateral ears on 0pposite sides for engagement by the exhaust manifold clamps, said chamber being further provided with an air intake port and a valved nozzle in communication with the intake manifold and being of cross sectionally reduced area toward its point of communication with said nozzle.
