AUXILIARY ATrAoHMEn'r non INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed July 23, 1923. Serial No. 653,302.
To all whom it may. concern:
Beit known that I, J AOK S. HAYWOOD. a
citizenof the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Attachments for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following'is a specification. I
This invention relates to an attachment for internalcombustion engines, and an object of the invention isto provide an attachment which will enhance the vaporization of the fuel passed into the engine or motor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a nozzle particularly designed for use in connection with the vaporizing attachment for internal combustion engines as disclosed in my companion application filed December 30, 1922, Serial No. 609,960, and also to provide a nozzle which will eject moistened air into the intake manifold of its proper admixing with the combustible vapor passing into the intake manifold from the carburetor.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved nozzle.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the nozzle.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail section of a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the preferred form of nozzle structure comprises a carrying plate or body 1, which is constructed of any suitable material, preferably aluminium or the like and is provided with a central transverse opening 2 which is adapted to have communication with the outlet of a carburetor and the bore of an intake manifold (not shown) of an internal combustion engine. The body 1 is provided with'substantially oval shaped bolt receiving openings 3 to facilitate its attachment to an internal combustion engine. H j
A nipple 4 is formed on one edge of the body 1 and projects upwardly at acute an-' gles to the horizontal. The nipple 4 is provided with a central bore 5 which projects downwardly diagonally through the body and terminates in a recess 6 in the body 1 at the opposite side of the opening 2 from which the bore enters the opening. The nozzle proper 7 which preferably comprises a piece of copper tubing orthe like extends through the bore 5, diagonally across the opening 2 and has its inner end seated in the recess 6. ,A fluid tight joint is provided between the nozzle 7 and the nipple 4 and the nozzle is held in place by means of a packing gland or nut structure 8 of any approved type. v
The portion of the nozzle which extends across the opening 2 is provided with a plurality of transverse perforations 9 arranged in rows at diametrically opposed positions in the nozzle, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. These openings are provided to permit the outlet of the moistened air into the opening 2 for mixing with the vaporized fuel passing from a carburetor (not shown); Owingto the particular location of the various openings 9, the force exerted by the moistened air issuing from the openings 9 will have a tendency to create a vacuum along the nozzle within the opening 2 and to break this vacuum a pair of openings 10 are drilled in the nozzle at right angles to the openings 9.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, the modified form of the invention shows the nozzle 7' which is provided with the openings 9 and 10 which serve exactly the same function as the openings 9 and 10, however, the end of the nozzleadjacent to the openings 9 and 10 is closed so that'if it is so desired the modified form of nozzle may be inserted into the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine without using the body 1.
It is, of course,'t0 be understood that the engines comprising a body plate having a and being provided with a plurality of pertransverse opening, a nipple formed on one forations arranged in diametrically opposed l0 edge thereof, said nipple and body drilled rows longitudinally of the nozzle at its to provide a diagonal bore 7 and a recess bore within said transverse opening and said aligning with the bore, a nozzle extending nozzle.
through said bore and having its inner end In testimony whereof I affix my signature. seated in said recess, said nozzle extending diagonally across said transverse opening JACK S. HAYWOOD.
