JOHN MoGRAITI-I, or LARK, NORTH DAKOTA.
ADJUSTABLE S-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,326.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN McCRArrH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lark, in the county of Grant, State of'North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable 8- lVi-enches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable jaws being readily and easily adjustable with despatch and with accuracy independently of the handle portion of said wrench.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to enable the convenient and easy adjustment both of the jaws and the angular disposition thereof for the convenient use of the wrench.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which possesses few parts, thereby rendering the same simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its operation, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture. There are various other objects and advantages of this invention besides the above, all of which will be hereinafter more fully and particularly brought out in the following specific description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the inven tion;
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench with the facing plate removed;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views detail, A
111' the drawing.
Iteferrmg to the drawing in designates generally the housing or casing of the wrench, which includes a frame 10 having the reversed tapered end portions 11 and on one side of the frame is an integral facing plate 12 while on'the opposite side is a removable facing plate 13, the casing or housing 10 being designed to serve as the handle or shank of the wrench.
The opposite tapered ends 11 of the easing or housing at the extremities thereof are open and in each are fitted rocking arms 14- swingingly supported upon transverse pivots 15 journaled in the facing plates of said casing or housing crosswise of the latter so that the arms 14 can be swung at any-desirable angle within predetermined limits.
Formed on the outer'end of each arm is a stationary jaw 16 while slidably fitted in said arm is a movable aw 17 the latter being adjusted through the medium of an adjusting nut 18 held within the arm and threaded on a feed screw 19 formed on the movable jaw 17 the details of construction of the movable jaw and the manner of adjusting the same being of the usual well known form so that the movable jaw can be accurately adjusted relative to the stationary jaw 16 for the gripping of a piece of work as usual.
J ournaled in the frame 10 intermediate.
thereof are spaced parallel feed screws 20 on each of which is mounted a feed block 21 which moves longitudinally upon the screw and carries a pivot 22 working within an elongated slot 23 formed on the inner end portion of the arm 14 so that in this manner the said arm is pivotally connected to the block 21 for the angular adjustment of the arm on movement of the block upon the feed screw 20 which is actuated in a manner presently described.
Formed on or fixed to reverse ends of the screw 20 are adjusting wheel heads 24 which are exposed for manual manipulation through suitable openings 25 formed in the face plates 12 and 13 whereby the heads 24 may be turned by manual manipulation at either side of the housing or casing A of the wrench, and on the movement of the heads the screws 20 will be rotated for shifting the feed blocks 21 thereby enabling the angular adjustment of the arms 14 forthe changing of the disposition of the jaw heads thereon. Thus it will be apparent that the wrench may be used for the handling of work in contracted or restricted places.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and the manner of operation of the wrench will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. A wrench including a body, a jaw arm pivoted to the body and having a portion extending beyond the pivot in the form of a lever, jaws carried by the jaw arm, a feed screw mounted in the body, a threaded member mounted in such relation to the feed screw as to move bodily when the screw is rotated and connections between the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing threaded member and the lever portion of the jaw arm for movement of the arm on its pivot when the member is moved.
2. A wrench including a body, a jaw arm pivoted to the body, jaws carried by the jaw arm, a feed screw in the body, a feed block threaded upon the screw and pivotal and sliding connections between the jaw arm and the feed block for movement of the jaw arm pivotally when the feed screw is rotated to move the feed block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MQORAITH.
