' Specification of Letters Patent.
'IPate-nted New. 4.191s.
Application filed June-2, 1919. Serial No. 301,278.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn L. MAYHEW, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at Williamstown, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings.
his invention relates to certain improvements in tools and has relation more particularly to a tool of this general character of a plier type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a. novel and improved tool of this character which is particularly adapted for use in the opening and closing of chain links.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a noveland improved device of this general character including two pivotally connected jaws normally in closed relation whereby com ression of the 0% rating handl'es for the aws results in te expansion on link through which the jaws are inserted and wherein ,the operating handles are adapted-to be employed for the closing of the links. I
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my inn-- proved tool whereby certaln important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convmient and advantageous for use,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention maybe the better understood, '1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspeptive of a tool constructed in accordance with an embodi- 'ment of my invention and 415 Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A and B denote two elongated members preferably formed of pressed steel and of channel formation with the-open faces thereof disposed one toward the other.
Adjacent extremities of the members A and B are provided with the straight exbers A and'B are supported for swinging movement one relative to the other. It is also to benoted thatthe jaw or straight portion lot the member B extends'within the jaw or straight portion 1 of 'the.member A.
Encircling the central portion of the pivot 3 is 'an intermediate portion of a spring member 4, the extremities of said member 4: bearing against the members A and B at the side of the pivot 3 opposite to the jaws or straight portions 1, whereby the portions or jaws 1 are constantly urged one toward the other.
The portions of the members A and B remote from the portions or jaws 1 constitute operating handles and are normally maintained separated so that upon the compression of said operating handles, the straight portions or jaws 1 are caused to se arate.
he outer edge' faces of the portions or I jaws 1 are provided with the longitudinally spaced notches or recesses 5 in which the side members of a chain link are adapted to be engaged so that upon separation of the portions or jaws 1, the link will be expanded. By having the recesses or notches 5 spaced longitudinally of the portions or jaws 1, it will at once be obvious that my improved tool may be employed in connection with links of different sizes.
The handle portions of the members A and B in close proximity to the ivot.3 are provided in their inner edges with a series of Ion itudinally spaced notches or recesses 6 whic' are adapted to engage the side members of a link positioned therebetween so 'It will be noted that the recesses or notches 5 and 6 are in close proximity to the pivot member 3 which assures ease of operation.
It is also to be noted that by having oneed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modifica tion without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A tool of the class described comprising two pivotally connected'members, the portions of said members at one side of the pivot constituting operating handles and the portions ofthe'membe'r's at theopposite side of the pivot constituting jaws, the outer faces of the jaws being provided with transversely extending notches, the operating handles being of channel formation with their open faces disposed one toward the other, the edges of said handle members being provided with substantially transversely alined notches.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my Y signature in JOSEPH L.
