narran stares PATENT QFFCE..
EVERETT- W. FUNK, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
COMBINATION WRENCH.
Application led July 29,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EvnnETT W. FUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cclumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and u seful Improvements in Combination VrenCheS; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination wrenches and has for its primary object the provision of a device for gripping nuts of different shapes and for gripping pipes and other round articles and also may be conveniently employed for pulling nails and the like.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a wrench of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparative-lj7 low cost.
lith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of In invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying draw- 1 ings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the same,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a solid shank which has one end angularly related and bifurcated or forked as illustrated at 2, to provide a nail puller. The other end of the shank 1 has formed integrally therewith stationary jaws 3 and 4 that extend oppositely to each other. The jaw 4 has a straight serrated face 5 for engaging nuts and other articles having angularly related faces while the jaw 3 is provided with an arcuate serrated face 5 to engage pipes and other round articles.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
1921. Serial N0. 488,320.
The shank 1 adjacent to the face 5 is arcuately curved as illustrated at 6 to cooperate with said face 5 in engaging pipes and other round articles. The end of the shank 1 on which the jaws 3 and 4 are formed is curved as illustrated at 7.
A housing S is rigidly secured to the shank 1 by a rivet 9 and is provided with longitudinally extending openings to receive stems 10 and 11 which slidably engage the shank 1 and are provided with feed threads 12. The shank 10 has formed upon one end an arcuate shaped jaw 13 provided with a serrated face to cooperate with the faces 5 and 6 for gripping pipes and other round articles. The stem 11 has formed integrally therewith a movable jaw 14 which is provided with a straight face 15 that is serrated to cooperate with the jaw 4 or the face 5 thereof in gripping nuts and similar devices.
The housing 8 has journaled therein longitudinally extending adjusting nut-s 16 and 17 which engage the feed threads of the stem 11 for the purpose of advancing and retarding the jaws 13 and 14 with respect to the jaws 3 and 4. The housing 8 is provided with openings in the top and bottom walls to expose the adjusting nuts 16 and 17 whereby they may be conveniently rotated in the usual manner for operating or sliding the stems 10 and 11 to bring about adjustment of the movable jaws in respect to the stationary jaws.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is z- A wrench comprising a shank oppositely arranged stationary aws formed on said shank and one of said jaws having an arcuate active face, and the other aw having a straight active face, a housing secured to said shank, stems having feed threads slidably received by the housing and extending parallel with the shank, movable jaws carried by said stems, and one of said aws having an arcuate active face and the other movable jaw having a straight active face, feed nuts joui'naled to said housing and engaging the In testimony whereof I affix my signature lstems for actuating the movable jaws, said in presence of two Witnesses. l
musing having eut-away portions to expose 7 A the adjusting nuts, said shank having a EX ERETT W' FUNK 5 portion arcuately curved to cooperate with VVitnessesr the arcuate active facesA of the stationary ALLEN AUSTIN,
and movable jaws. FRANK FUNK.
