PATENT OFFICE.
MARVEN WILLIAM CROW, OF FORT DODGE, IOWA.
PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed. June 19,
This invention relates to a pipe wrench, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereb the jaws of the wrench will automatically grip an object placed between them in such a manner that the more pull exerted on the wrench, the tighter the wrench will grip the object.
Another object of the invention is to make one aw of the wrench in the form of a rotary disk having teeth thereon, this disk also acting to adjust the movable jaw.
This invention also consists in certain 'other features of construction and in the combination and arrangen'i-ent of the several parts, to be hereina ter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughoutthe several views, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of the improved wrench,
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. t is a section on line 1-4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 shows a section on line 55 of Fig. 1. V
In these views, 1 indicates the handle of a. wrench which is formed with an enlarged inner end 2 which is provided with a recess 8 which opens out through a corner of said end. A U-shaped frame 4 is fastened to this enlarged end by the bolts 5 and 6. the bolt 6 forming a bearing for a toothed disk or wheel 7 which is arranged in the recess. This frame forms a guide for the shank 8 of the movable jaw 9, said shank being provided with the teeth 10 on its inner edge which are engaged by the teeth of the disk, and the jaw 9 is provided with the gripping teeth 11. A plate 12 is pressed against a part of the teeth of the shank 8 by means of a coiled spring 13 arranged in a recess 1a in the part 2, the plate having a stem 15 thereon which extends into the recess ant around which the spring is placed. The part 2 is formed with a shallow recess 16 1926. Serial No. 117,156.
to receive the plate when the shank 8 is pressed against the handle 1.
From the foregoing, it'will be seen that when a pipe or other object is seized by the wrench, the entrance of the object between the jaws will cause the rotation of the wheel or disk 7, and the movement of this disk is communicated to the shank 8 through the teeth 10 sothat the jaw 9 will be moved inwardly to engage the object. Thus the object is automatically gripped by the placing of the-wrench thereon and the force exerted on the wrench to turn the pipe or object will cause the wrench tomore firmly grip the object.
The spring-pressed plate 12 acts to hold the movable jaw 9 against the object, though by pressing the inner end of the shank 8 downwardly to force the plate 12 in its recess, the movable jaw can be readily adjusted to enable the wrench to fit various sizes of objects.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with- -in the scope of the appended claim.
hat I- claim is A wrench of the class described comprising a handle having an enlarged inner end which is provided with a recess, a yokeshaped frame fastened to the enlarged portion and having a part forming a guide, a movable jaw having a shank slidably mounted in the guide, the inner edge of the shank being toothed, a toothed wheelrotatably mounted. in the recess with its teeth engaging the teeth of the shank and some of its teeth projecting beyond the end of the enlarged part so that they will engage and be placed between the jawsand thus the wheel will be rotated, and a spring-pressed plate carried by the handle and engaging the shank. I
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
