CLEVIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed May 10,. 1919. Serial No. 296,091.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST WILLIAM ST. ONGn, a citizen of the United States,
and a resident of Superior, in the county of Douglas and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in clevises, and has for its object to provide mechanism for use in connection with the clevises, for preventing displacement of the bolt, and for preventing the spreading of the arms of the clevis at the bolt.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the improved clevis.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder re moved.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a clevis oonsisting of the usual body 1 and arms 2, the
arms having the usual eyes 3 for engagement by the bolt 4.
I provide a link 5 which is of a size to slip over the clevis body and arms and to move longitudinally of the clevis until it engages the eyes, which prevent it from further movement, and hold it in the required position on the clevis. This link has at one end a lug 6 extending laterally from the plane of the link, the said lug being of a length to engage the head 7 of the bolt when the link is in engagement with the e es.
l Vith this arrangement, to release the bolt it is only necessary to move the link toward the body 1 of the clevis, far enough to release the head of the bolt from the lug 6.
Referring to Fig. 1 it will be noticed that the inner face of the lug 6 is inclined or beveled, from the point of the lug to its connection with the link, and this incline may be made by beveling the said inner face of the lug, or by inclining the entire lug. The inclined face of the lug cooperating with the inclined face of the head of the bolt in sures a firm engagement, while at the same time it provides for an easy disengagement.
In addition to its function as a holder for the bolt, the link acts as a stay to prevent spreading of the clevis, a feature of importance, since it is frequently the case that in heavy work the clevis very difficult to release the bolt. Any tendency of the clevis to spread with the im-- proved holder merely tightens the holder on the bolt.
I claim:
1, lln combination with a clevis consisting of a body and arms, of means for preventing disengagement of the bolt from the clevis, said means comprising a link adapted to pass over the body of the clevis and over the arms to a point adjacent to the bolt, said link having a laterally extending lug for engaging the head of the bolt to hold the bolt in the clevis, said lug having its inner face inclined outwardly from the link toward the free end of the lug.
2. In combination with a clevis, ofmeans for preventing disengagement of the bolt from the clevis, said means comprising a link adapted to pass over the clevis to a point adjacent to the bolt, said link having a laterally extending lug for engaging the head of the bolt to hold the bolt in the clevis.
3. In combination with a clevis consisting of a body and arms. the arms having eyes, and a bolt engaging the eyes of a link fitting outside of the arms and adapted to engage the arms adjacent to the eyes, and having means for engaging the head of the bolt to prevent disengagement thereof.
