CUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR PUNCI-IING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed. May 6, 1919. Serial No. 295,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn E. TRAUB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cutting Attachment for Punching-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to cutters for cutting round corners on paper and card board and has for its object the provision of a round corner cutting tool which can be adapted for use in punching machines now on the market, especially the machine manufactured under Patents Numbers 871739 and 961381. Another object is the provision of means to prevent the paper from slipping while it is being cut.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the assembled invention, except the key bracket, looking toward the concave side of the cutter; Fig. 2, an elevation of a cross section through the center of Fig. 1, looking toward the left; Fig. 3, a plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a side elevation of a punching head of the aforesaid punching machine, showing the invention' operatively mounted therein, the key 10 being disposed in the keyway 2, for the purpose of guiding the cutter in cutting thumb index openings; Fig. 5, a front elevation of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a plan view of the cutting block 16; Fig. 7 an elevation of Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a bottom view of the key bracket; Fig. 9, a front elevation of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10, a fragmentary view of a card after being cut round cornered, the dotted lines showing the curve of the cutting edge of the cutter 3.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The invention comprises the cylinder 1, having a knob 8 at the top, a threaded extension 9 at the bottom, key ways 2, 2 and 2 on the periphery, and a longitudinal chamber in the center thereof; a spring 13 secured within said chamber; a cylindrical rod 11 within said chamber connected to said spring and having a head 12 on the lower end thereof; a cutter 3, screwed on the threaded extension 9; a key bracket 4 adapted to be mounted on the front of a punching head H of a punching machine so that the key 10 thereof will work in a key way on said cylinder 1 when said cylinder is mounted in said punching head as shown in Fig. 4..
of; a cutter The adaptation shown in the intended for use in the to which reference is made in the preamble and the description refers specifically to this machine. Round cornerscannot be pr duced by the act of punching with a punch, but with the aid of my attachment to the punching machine, this class of work can be accomplished without any alteration of the punching machine, except to substitute my device for the punch and to mount my key bracket and cutting block.
hen it is desired to use my device, the punch is removed from the punching head H and my cylinder 1 is substituted therefor; the key bracket 4 is secured to the front of the punching head as shown in Fig. 4; the wooden cutting block 16 is inserted in the lower hole of the punching head so that the cutting blade will have a soft surface upon which to work. To cut the upper right hand corners the key way works over the key 10; to cut the upper left hand corners the key way 2 works over the key 10 and to cut thumb index openings the ke way 2 works over the key 10. The knob 8 is provided to fit an element in the punching machine above mentioned. When the cutter becomes broken it may be unscrewed and a new cutter screwed on the threaded extension 9.
As the cylinder 1 rises it elevates the drawings is partlcular machine rod 11 and the paper to be cut is placed under the head 12; as the cylinder 1 de scends the head 12 of the rod 11 strikes the paper first and compresses the spring 13 before the cutter reaches the paper and holds it firmly while being cut, thereby preventing any slipping. In order to clear the straight edges of the paper, the cutting blade is curved as shown in Fig. 10.
I claim:
1. A round corner cutting attachment of the class described adapted to be used on a punching machine, comprising a cylinder having a knob at the top thereof adapted to fit an element of a punching machine, a series of key ways on the periphery, a threaded extension on the lower end therescrewed 611 said threaded extension, said cutter being curved to cut round corners on paper; for the purposes set forth.
2. A round corner cutting attachment for punching machines, of the class described comprising a cylinder having longitudinal key ways on the periphery thereof, a curved end thereof, a knob on the top thereof, and a longitudinal chamber in the center thereof; a spring within said chamber; and a rod attached to the lower end of said spring; for the purposes set forth.
3. A round corner cutting attachment of the class described, comprising a cylinder having a. curved cutter on the lower end thereof a knob at the top thereof, and a series of longitudinal key ways on the periphery thereof; adapted for use in a punchin machine.
*1. A cutting attachment of the class decutter on the lower Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the scribed, adapted for use in a punching ma- 15 chine, comprising a cylinder having a kno at the top thereof, a curved cutter on the lower end thereof, a series of key ways on the periphery thereof, and a longitudinal chamber in the center thereof; a spring disposed within said chamber; a rod attached to the lower end of said spring; a bracket having a key thereon adaptedto work in a key way on said cylinder, said bracket being adapted to be mounted on the front of a punching head of a punching machine; for
the purposes set forth.
