UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
-ALOYS PIEPER, OF LUDINGHAUSEN, GERMANY.
MARKING'ATTACHMENT FOR DlElNG-OUT KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IEatent No. 650,652, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed April 22, 1898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoi s PIEPER, a sub ject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Liidinghausen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Numis given a distinctive number simultaneously with the cutting-out of such piece, the numbering device being secured to the cuttingknife in such a manner that as the latter is forced down upon the material to be cut the numbering device is likewise forced down and caused to impress the number which it carries upon the material, or, if it be a punch, to cut from the material the number borne by the punch.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a numbering-punch made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, showing the manner of of securin git to the cutting-blade of the knife, the latter being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, b represents a cylindrical sleeve in which is slidingly arranged the punch or character bearing part a, and on the upper edge of the sleeve is screwed a cap 0. The bottom or lower face of the punch has formed thereon or secured thereto in any suitable manner the figure or character which it is desired to impress upon or cut from the material to be operated on. On the upper face or top of the punch is placed a rubber ring e, upon which rests the lower end of a spiral springf, the upper end of which bears against the under side of the cap 0. If desirable, the rubber ring may be dispensed with and the spring allowed to rest directly upon the upper end of the punch.
In the sides of the sleeve 17 are vertical slots h, in which slide pins g, which are removably secured in the punch in suitable holes 1', formed therein at different points in the body of the punch, said pins having suitable heads serial N0. 678,491. (No model.)
on their outer ends. These pins serve to prevent the rotation of the punch and also serve to limit its upward movement. By making the holes at different heights, as shown in Fig. 1, the length of stroke of the punch may be varied as may be desired to adapt the device to the varying stroke of the cutting-blade to which it is attached, a longer stroke being required for material that is very thick or where a number of thicknesses are operated upon.
The numbering blade of the cutting knife, preferably by means of a bolt m, one end of. which is rigidly secured to the sleeve and the other end is threaded to receive a thumb-nut 'n, whichis screwed up against the blade 0 after the bolt has been passed through a suitable opening in the blade, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be apparent that as the cutting-blade descends through the material operated upon the unch will be brought into contact with the upper surface of the material, and the character borne by the punch will be impressed thereon or punched therethrough, if a cutting edge is given the character and the spring is of sufficient tension. It will also be apparent that arrangement may be made for inking the face of the character borne by the punch, so that an inked impression may be made upon the material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Anumberingattachmentforcutting-knives, consisting of a sleeve, a character-bearing punch slidingly fitting said sleeve and yieldingly supported therein, means for limiting the vertical movement of the punch, consist ing of pins removably secured in suitable holes in the side of the punch, and slots in the sides of the sleeve wherein the pins slide, and means for securing the sleeve to a cutting-knife, substantially as set forth.
