Be it known that l, CHARLES Q. REY- NOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skiving Machines, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a guard for skiving machines, and is designed with special reference to skiving machines of the char acter shown in United States Letters Patent No. 220,906 to Amazeen, dated Getober 2S, 1879, for leather skiving machines.
In the use of skiving machines of this type` it has been found that, after the leather has been skivedby the .rotary cutter, it is liable to curve upwardly with a consequent possibility of being cut-or injured by the rear portion of the cutting disk. To avoid this diiculty the constant attention of the operator is required,- andhe is obliged to di.- rect with his hand that portion of the material which has been fed through the ma-Y` chine and skived,land to hold itdown and away from the rear portion of the cutting member. j
l`The main object of my invention is the provision of a guard so formed that the material, after being skiVed, will be deflected in a downward direction and away from Ythe cutting member, thereby avoiding all possibility of the material being injured by the rear `portion of the cutting member.
Another object of the inventionis the provision of a guard of the character described, which is of simple and efticientconstruction and which is capable of attachment to eX- isting machines, without requiring any changes therein. 1
Other Vobjects of the invention willrbe more specifically set forth and described hereinafter.
In its preferred form my invention contemplates a guard, adapted to kbe attached to the under surface of the cutter, and of a form adapted to deflect the material in a downward direction after it has been cut or skived. Although my invention is designed with special reference to the Amazeen machine above referred to, it may be applied to various other machines of this character. In the accompanying drawings illustrat-V ing one form of my invention, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the voperative parts of a skiving machine of the construction hereinbefore referred to, showing a guard' applied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the operative parts shown in and looking upwardly in Fig. l; and Fig; 3 isa central, vertical, sectional view of the cutter with a guard made in accordance with my invention applied thereto.
In the drawings showing one embodiment illustrative of my invention, 1GO indicates a skeleton cuttingdisk, held in position on the end of a shaft 12 between a disk 14 secured to said shaft and an outer locking disk 16. The'outer edge or periphery 18 of the latter disk 16.is bevelled and adapted Vtoengage the bevelled inner edge of the cutting; disk 10, and thereby hold the latter disk in fixed position against a flange 20 on the disk 14. A screw 22 threaded into the end of the shaft serves to hold the locking disk in place.
A feed roll 30, mounted on a shaft 82, cooperates with a feeding disk 36 carried by va shaft 38; the two shafts being substantially perpendicular' to each other.V The feeding portion 40 of the feed roll is slanted, and maybe provided with diagonal corrugations or ribs to grip the material inthe feeding operation.

The spring bar 52 is resilient, and to holdv it downwardly, yet permitting it to yield when necessary, the plate is provided with an upright, iiXed screw pin 60, set in its end and passing loosely through a hole in the spring bar 52.
