Description

E. 0. SGHABTAU. Machines for Cutting Cork.
Patented June 23,1874.
No.l52,421-.
W7," 577/49 a sea 1&1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EIBERT o. SCHARTAU, on NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING CORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,421, dated June 23, 1874; application filed June 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ernnu'r O. SCHARTAU, of New Orleans, in the parish of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Cutting Corks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a die-holder and dies for cork-cutting machines, in which cylindrical knives are used for cutting the corks, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
I11 order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a section, of my invention.
A represents the frame, with top guide B and side guide 0, to which my die-holder and dies are attached. In the frame A is made a circular recess to receive the die-holder l), which is circular in form and held in said recess by means of screws a a, or any other suitable means. In the face of the die-holder D is an annular recess or chamber, 1), which forms a dust-box, and from which a channel, (I, leads through the holder and frame, as shown in Fig. 1, to allow the cork-dust to es cape. I11 the center of the recess I) in the dieholder D, is placed the center die E, which is provided with a screw, 0, to pass through a hole in the bottom of the holder and be fastened by a nut, f, as shown in Fig. 2. G rep resents the die-plate fastened, by screws i, to the holder D, and provided with a circular hole in the center, through which the center die E projects, said hole being large enough to leave sufiicient space around the center die for the passage of the cylindrical knife used in cutting the corks.
The die-plate G and center die E can readily be removed and others of different size substituted for cutting larger or smaller corks, as may be desired, the same die-holder answerin g for all.
The center die E may be used at the same time as a stamp for imprinting the trade-mark of the malnifacturer by having the same raised upon the surface of the die.
I represents a self'acting Whetstone, and J the knife-wiper, arranged in the dust-box b of the die-holder, and for which I have made a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The die-holder D, constructed with dustbox b and channel cl, for the escape of the dust, substantially as and for the purpose de scribed.
2. The removable die-plate G and center die E, in combination with holder D,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EIBERT O. SCI'IARTAU.
