CUTTER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,015, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed December 16, 1891. Serial No. 415,252- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. J UDKINS, of East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outter-Heads; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference ments in revolving cutter-heads.
The object of the invention is to produce a cutter-head by which strips of any length may be turned in irregular forms.
The-invention consists in the peculiar construction of the adjustable cutters and guides and their novel combination'with a centrallyperforated cutter-head or equivalent device for supporting said cutters and guides, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a view of the revoluble head and the cutters secured thereto. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the cutter-head, showing the rotatable cutter and the guide-disk and indicating their operation. Fig. 4. represents a vertical sectional view through one of the rotating cutters and its adjustable support. Fig. 5 represents a vertical sectional view of one of the slotted supports to which one of the guide- Wheels is adj ustably secured.

In the drawings, 6 indicates a metal sleeve screw-threaded on its interior surface and having the outwardly extending flange 7, forming a face-plate in the surface of which are formed the radially-extending guides 8 8, each of which is provided with a slotted opening 9, extendingthrough the remaining thickness of said flange 7. These perforations may be circular, as shown in Fig. 4, the diameter being but slightly greater than that of the bolts; or they may be formed as slots (indicated in Fig. 5) to allow for adjustment of the bolts 13 13 with relation to the surface of the face plate. Each of the bolts 13 is provided with a circumferential shoulder 15 of larger diameter than the perforations in the standards 10 or 10, and forming bearings for the rotatable disks l6 and 16', in the edges of which patterns are cut corresponding to the proposed shape of the finished material. The pattern-edges of one or more of these disks maybe sharpened to form cutters, the remaining disks forming r0- tatable guides between which and the cutting-disks the material is held from lateral movement While'allowing said material to be advanced between said guides and cutters as they are revolved. 1
It is obvious that any number of cutting-disks may be used, some of which serve as guide-disks, or that the pattern-edges of one or more disks may be left unsharpened to serve as such guide-disks. The cutters shown in the drawings have pattern-edges adapted to form a round beaded molding; but this pattern may be varied by the adjustment of the cutting-disks on the standards 10 or by replacing the cutters shown by others having a different pattern-edge. By moving the bases 11 outward from the center of the face-plate a larger piece of material can be passed through between the cutters and guides.
This improved cutter-head is adapted for use in cutting either wood or metal by the use of disks having suitable cutting-edges.
