MACHINE FOR SEPARATING STONES FROM CLAY.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,613, dated September 11, 1883.
' I Application filed November'22, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY OooKELL, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Machine for Separating Stones from Clay, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters Io 0f reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification. 1
This invention relates to improvements in machines that are intended to be'used in separating stones from clay in the preparation of the same for brick-making purposes, and also greatly facilitates the after-tempering process. Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a machine embodying my improvement; Fig. 2,
a top view of the hopper and inclosed rotat- 2o ing diaphragm; and Fig. 3, a sectional detail in the plane 90 a, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting frame-work, and B the circular "hopper which receives the clay to be operated upon. This hopper I preferably make of the form shown, the greatest diameter being at the bottom, so that the clay will not have a tendency to mass or clog the operation of the device. On the interior lower part of this hopper I place the conical rotating cuttingdisk 0,
provided with the series of rectangular knives D, which are set at an oblique angle relative to the inclosing-walls of the hopper. These knives are adj ustably secured in place by the screw-bolts a, set in the recessed notches a.
The base or back of these knives is supported by the set-screws set in the rib formed on the under side of the cutting disk or diaphragm C. By this arrangement the series of knives 40 are conveniently adjusted to take a cut of any required depth.
The adjustable slide 1) may be moved up nearer to or farther away from the knives, so as to enlarge or diminish the openings 1) in the cutting-disk, through which the clay is discharged. In practice these openings will be of a small area, so that only the very small stones will pass out with the clay. The upper surface of the cutting-diskbeing an in clined plane, the larger stones will naturally gravitate toward the lower edge as the rotating knives shave off the mass of clay, and may be conveniently removed from the door 01, cut in the periphery of the hopper.
The cuttingdisk O is provided with the hub 0, through which passes the vertical shaft E. The, lower end of this shaft has a bearing in the step-box D, supported -by the cross-bars b The upper end of the shaft is provided with the journal-box d, and may have any geared or other suitable connection with the driving-shaft F for the purpose of transmitting the required motion and power.
Instead of setting the cutting-disk so as to rotate in a horizontal .plane, it may be arranged in a vertical plane and the knives set at any angle to perform the required functions or the cuttingdisk may be set at any angle between a horizontal and perpendicular, or used in an inverted position.
I am aware of the employment for various purposes of a rotating disk suitably inclosed and adapted to carry a series of cutters. I therefore do not broadly claim any of these features.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine for separating stones from clay, the combination, with a hopper having its greatest diameter at its lower end, of the conical disk C, rotating on the inside of the same, and adapted to carry a series of rectangular-shaped knives, the cuttingedges whereof are set at an oblique angle relative to the inclosing-hopper, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the hopper B, of the coneshaped disk 0, provided with the openings b, the series of knives D, and the adjustable slide 1), whereby the space between said knives and slide may be of a greater or less width, as may be required, substantially as set forth.
3. The cone-shaped disk 0, having the rib formed on the under side thereof, in combination with the series of knives D, the screwbolts a, and the set-screws, substantially as described.
HARVEY cooKnLL.
