Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919'.
Application filed March 26, 1919. Serial N o. 285,278.
To all 07mm t may concern: v
.Be it known that I, ELwooD HAwKiNs,
Aa citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usei'ulY Improvements in Toys, off
which the following is a specification.,
This invention relates to an improved toy of the pin vwheel type and `the principal ob,
ject of the invention is to provide an iinproved pin wheel toy having improved means to rotatably mount the axle of the pini wheel and connect the axle carrying yoke with the handle and to further provide an improved carrier mounted upon the axle of the pin wheel and loosely supporting toy` figures so that they may be moved yabout the moving.
Another object of the invention is topprovide improved means for connecting the aux-` iliary toy figures with the carrier carried by the pin wheel aXlethe carriers for the fige' ures being. extended to constitute counter weights. Another object of the invention is to so construct these figure holders that they may be detached when desired but to further so construct vthem that the holders will not accidentally becomedisconnected from the earrier mounted upon the pin wheelaxle.
Another object of theinvention is to, so
construct this toy that it will be simple in construction and cheap to produce and to further so construct it that it will be strong and durable, and not liable to easily get out of order or become broken.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a view showingF the improve@ toy in elevation,
Fig. 2 is a view showing the toy in elevation and taken at right angles to the showing in Fig: 1,
Fi g. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the mounting for the auxiliary toy iigure taken on the line 3 3 of F ig. 2j
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line i-l of Fig. 3, o
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upper portion of. the handle together with the axle carrying yoke withdrawn from the handle.
Fi g. 6 is a sectional view through the handle taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. y2.
This imprevedtoy er pin wheei is prorided with a handle 1Q having its upper end an upright position while vention al ligure.
` a` choice as to the type of figure.
portion provided with a socket 11 and side slots 12 through which will pass the arms13 of the axle carrying yoke or fork indicated in general by the numeral 14. This fork is formed of a single strand .of wire bent inter-` mediate its length to provide the shank .15 which lits into the socketll. The arms 13 extend throughthe slots12 and have theirfree end portion bent to provide fingers 16 which terminate in bearings 17 through which will extend the axle V18. `The shanks will lit tightly into the socket and if desired maybe secured againstremoval by glue.,
This axle 18 turns easily in the bearings 17 and extends beyond the bearings 17 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A pin wheel 19 `is rigidly mounted upon one end portion of the V axle. This pin wheel will be of a conventional construction and may be rigidly secured upon the axle in any desired manner. Upon Vthe opposite end, portion of the eX- tended Vaxlewill be mounted the auxiliary toy and will include a carrier having arms y2O rigidly mounted upon the axle in spaced relation and having their end portions coli-` nected by pins or bearing arms 21. These cross bars 21 are to inountthe figures-22 and A it isV to be understood Vthat the `invention is not limited to the specific type lof figures.
shown.` This simply illustrates theV con- The figure shown is that of a small chicken and is formed `oi cotton. This ligure is provided with a base or holder formed of sheet metal punched out to provide outstanding'projections,23 along thev sleeve 24. This rougheninir of the .sleeve 24 permits the cotton from which the figure is formed to adhere very tightly to the sleeve when the figure is put in place and secured by ,glue or some other similar fastening medium. `The end portions of the blankfrom Y which this holder is formed or bent to provide depending arms 25 whichconstitute a weight or counter-balance serving' to retain the figure in an upright' position VBy having the holder formed of resilient material the holders may be removed andnew ligures Y Y put in place thus permitting the vender ofV these toys to provide a number of. different kinds oi figures and put them in place when sellingthese toys thus giving the customer From the above description it will be readily Aevident that ,when the device is in 'use the axle isrotated by wind blowing* upon the pin wheel 19 an as the axle ref-.etes the earrer of the ana-f iliary structure ivill be rotated with the-axlesA The figures Will therefore move ina circle about the axle but Will retain their upright position due to the action of the arms 'orv Weights 25. It will thus be seen that a very novel and attractive toy/ has been provided.
