To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hart- 5 ford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scabbards, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, strong and secure construction for a Scabbard.

Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Referring to the drawings-a, denotes the main body of the scabbard which may, and preferably does, have a fiber lining b, and is provided at opposite sides with a spring 0, by means of which a blade introduced into the scabbard is held and steadied. d, is the mouth piece, shouldered as at e and constituting the support for the body. The upper end of the body fits into this mouth piece, the edge of the body being flanged out to fit upon the shoulder 6. Just above the shoulder the inner wall of the mouth 3 piece is provided with a groove or undercut j". Closely fitting within the mouth piece is a throat piece 9, slottedas at h, to receive a blade. This throat piece fits down upon the flanged-over end of the body where it rests on the shoulder a, of the mouth piece cl, and is preferably recessed slightly to provide a shoulder 70, which lies against the inner wall of the body in order to stiffen the upper end of the body and prevent its being crushed in and so loosened #from the mouth piece.

. Then the three parts, body, mouth piece and throat piece, have been assembled, the throat piece, by a blow from a properly formed tool, is forced down onto the flanged-over end of the body and its upper outer edge spread to interlock with the groove or undercut f, in the mouth plece. The seating and spreading of the mouth piece may be accomplished simultaneously by a suitably shaped tool with an edge which will cut into the throat piece, as indicated at m, the downward pressure seating the throat piece, and the flaring cross sectional shape of the blade throwing the metal out to interlock it with the mouth piece.

The three separate parts of this structure can be manufactured by simple and inexpensive processes, and when the three parts have been properly assembled, which is an operation of the utmostsimplicity, they may be united by a single, simple operation in a very efficient manner, producing a strong, well-finished Scabbard.

It may well be that the construction here illustrated and described may be adaptable for other articles of the general nature of a Scabbard, and this term is used herein merely for convenience in setting forth one article in the manufacture of which the invention is useful.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes 1 have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment therefor; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.

I claim as my invention 1. A scabbard having a mouth piece provided with an interior shoulder, a body with its end fitting within said mouth piece, a flange thereon adapted to lie onsaid shoulder to support said body, a throat piece having a weapon receiving slot and adapted to fit within said mouth piece and resting on said flange, and means for interengaging said mouth piece and throat piece to secure them and said body securely together.
