COMBINED COMB CASE AND CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed April 30, 1919. Serial No. 293,598.
To all whom it concern Be it known that I, CARL H. DUEDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stuart, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Comb Cases and Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles, and more particularly to comb cleaners.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be employed both as a comb case and as a cleaner therefor to adapt it to be carried in the pocket of the owner and used when desired, the projection and retraction of the comb relative to the case operating to clean the teeth thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for retaining the comb against accidental displacement.
Another object is to provide a comb and easing constructed to operate also as a cleaner, the comb having handles at its opposite ends projecting beyond the ends of the casing to provide for the ready projection and retraction of the comb teeth.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device constituting this invention, with parts broken out, the comb being shown in housed inoperative position,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the comb teeth in relation to the casing,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the comb teeth projecting ready for use, parts being broken out,
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 is a detail longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale, and
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on theline 88 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, the casing 1 constituting this invention is composed of any suitable material, preferably of aluminum, covered with a suitable fabric, or it may be left uncovered and decorated or not at the will of the manufacturer. This casing 1 has laterally spaced side walls 2 connected at both edges to form a comb receiving chamber 3, one edge wall of which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 4, through which the teeth T of the comb C are designed to be projected and retracted, the walls of said openings operating to scrape against the teeth during this movement of the comb and thus clean them of any adhering particles. The back of the comb C is provided at its opposite ends with projecting fingers F which are designed normally to extend beyond the ends of the casing and to be used to assist in projecting and retracting the comb teeth, the casing being held in the hands and the thumbs being placed on these fingers for moving the comb transversely in relation to the casing. The side walls 2 of the casing are preferably made slightly concave, as is shown clearly in Figs. 5 and 7 so that the back B of the comb will be gripped firmly between these walls and the comb held either in projected or retracted position. The casing 1 has one side wall provided with an indentation 5 forming a projection on its inner face which is designed to enter a recess 6 formed in one side of the comb back B so that longitudinal movement of the comb is prevented thereby insuring the proper positioning of the teeth T relatively to the apertures 4..
From the above description it will be obvious that this casing 1 will operate to house and protect the comb when not in use and also as a cleaner for the teeth thereof, said teeth being scraped by the side walls of the apertures 41 on each projection and retraction of the comb so that they will be at all times absolutely clean and sanitary.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire. to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within the scopeof the claimed invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined comb ease and cleaner comprising a casing substantially rectangular in cross section With longitudinally alined spaced apertures in one edge Wall for the passage of the comb teeth therethrough,
and resilient means for holding the casing engaged with the comb t retain it against accidental longitudinal movement, and yet permit its longitudinal removal when desired.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CARL H. DUEDE.
