To all lw'wm. it may concern:
Be it known that ll, Marr C. Carra, a lcitizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fish-Scrapers, of which the following is a speciHcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fish Scrapers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the loosened sca es are prevented from scattering about indiscriminately so that the operator and adjacent objects are protected against the loosened scales. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fish scraper whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less ex ensive and otherwise more convenient an advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be deHnitely claimed.
1n order that my invention may be the better unde m ll will now avi-wl to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a fish scraper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my iiivention, with a second position of one of the sections of the cover indicated by dotted lines' v Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a, sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanyin drawings 1 denotes a plate substantia 1y rectangular in form and provided with the upstanding side marginal Hanges 2 and the end Hanges 3 and t. The end Harige 3 is of a width less than the width of the second end Harige l and the adjacent end portions of the side Hanges 2 outwardly of the Hanges 3 are disposed on a predetermined inward incline as indicated at 5, said inclined marginal portions being substantially in transverse alinement.
. Adjacent the end Harige 3 the plate 1 is provided with the transversely disposed slots 6 i i by; in parelism d in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally of the plate 1. 'l`lie inner marginal portions of the .slots 6 are defined by the outwardly extending blades 7 having their cutting edges pro vided with the teeth 8.
C denotes a closure member consisting of the plates 9 having their adjacent end portions hingedly connected as at 10. Fach of the sections have their side and outer end marginal portions donned by the depending Hanges 11 adapted to overlic the flanges 2, 3 and l of the plate 1 whereby the collecting chamber aH'orded by the Hanges 2, 3 and 4 may be sealed during a scraping operation. The outer end portion of the section 9 overlying the slots 6 is beveled or inclined as at 12 in accordance with the inclined end edges 5 of the end Hange 3. 'lhe end Harige of each of the sections 9 adjacent the free marginal portion thereof is provided with an outstanding button 14: with which is adapted to be engaged a4 loop member 15 or the like carried by the adjacent end ortion of the plate 1. whereby the cover is eH'ectively maintained in applied position which also permits each of the sections 9 to be swung outwardly one independently of the other relative to the plate 1.
Extending outwardly from the end p0rtion of the plate 1 provided with the slot 6 are the arms 16 formed preferably of wire of requisite gage and which have their outer extremities suitably connected as at 17 for insertion within the handle 18. The handle 18 extends longitudinally of the plate l and in substantial alinement with the transverse center of said plate.
ln operation the plate 1 is properly drawn across the Hsh to be scaled and the scales loosened from the fish by the blades 7 pass within the collecting chamberand with the cover C applied it will be at once self evident that indiscriminate scattering of the loosened scales is prevented. en it is desired to remove the scales within the collecting chamber, it is only necessary to swing one of the sections 9, preferably the rear section, into open position. en it is desired to cleanse the device, the cover C is entirely removed and which is permitted by releasing both of the loops 15 or the like from the coacting buttons 1l.
From the foregoing description, it is thoughtto be obvious that a Hsh scraper constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of. the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A fish Scaler comprising a plate provided with upstanding marginal ianges to afford a collecting chamber, an end portion of said plate being provided with a transversely disposed slot, the inner marginal portionof said slot being defined by a cutting blade extending outwardly of the chamber, a removable cover provided with flanges adapted to overlie the flanges of the plate, said cover consisting of two hingedly connected sections alined longitudinally of the plate when the cover is entirely in closed position, and coacting means carried by the opposite ends of the closure member and the p ate for holding the closure member in applied position and the sections of the closure member against relative movement.
2. `A fish Scaler comprising a plate provided with upstanding marginal flanges to afford a collecting chamber, an end portion of said plate being provided with a transversely disposed slot, the inner marginal portion of said slot being defined by a cutting blade, a removable cover provided with ianges adapted to overlie the flanges of the plate, said cover being divided transversely into two hin edly connected sections, outstanding mem ers carried by the end flanges of the cover, and loop members secured to the plate and engageable with the outstanding members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
MARY CECILIA CALTA.
