Description
" defined in the sub-joined GEORGE H. BAKER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ORVILLE A.
BANTA, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WIN DOW-SHADE FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented a new and useful Window-Shade Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
he present invention relates to window shade fasteners, the object being to provide a window shade fastener which will permit the shade being lowered from the to and which will retain the shade in any adjusted position on the window frame.
A second object of the invention is to provide a shade fastener which may be used upon any window frame construction without reconstructing the saine and which will possess a neat appearance.
A further object is to provide a shade fastener which is easily operated and which will overcome the disadvantage of the curtain tearing from its fastenings as is often experienced with shades of the roller type.
An additional object of the invention is to rovide a shade fastener which is simple and) durable in use, consists of' few parts that may be readily assembled and disassembled and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists of combinations of elements, arrangement of parts, constructions and general assemblage which will be hereinafter enlarged upon and claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device in operative position on a window frame; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 1s an enlarged view of one of the locking devices and parts associated therewith partly in Section5 and Fig. a is a perspective of one of the locking plates.
eferring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts the numeral 5 denotes a window frame of any usual construction to which are secured the vertical guide rods 6 upon opposite sides thereof. These rods are formed with eyes 7 at their upper ends which are secured to the window frame by fastenings 8. These rods are spaced from the window frame by bending the upper ends at right-angles as indicated at 9, the rods being extended through eyes 10 mounted on the window frame adaJacent the lower ends of the rods.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led April 15, 1919. Serial No. 290,269.
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
A vertically movable bar l1 is provided to which is attached the shade 12 and has notches 13 formed in its upper edge at its opposite ends and further provided with openings 14 in these ends which receive the guide bars 6.
Locking plates 15 are slidably mounted upon the guide rods 6 and are provided with longitudinal slots 16 at their inner ends in which pins 17 carried by the sash are engaged. These pins 17 are bent at rightangles to retain the plates in their relative position.
Expansible coil springs 18 are seated in the notches 13 and encircle the guide rods 6 and bear against the under face of the plates l5 to normally retain the same at an angle to the sash bar so that the plates will bind on the guide rods and thus retain the bar against displacement.
The embodiment of the invention herein set forth and illustrated is considered the preferred construction but it will be understood that the construction may be modified in many respects and that my limits of modification are only governed by the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is :n
1. A shade fastening comprising verti cally disposed guide rods arranged upon opposite sides of the window, a shade attaching bar slidably engaged with the guide rods, an oppositely inclined locking plate disposed at each end of the bar and having pivotal and slidable connection therewith, an expansible coil spring en circling each of the guide rods and resting upon the bar and urging the locking plates to a position where the same will bind against the guide rods, and means for mov ing the locking plates to a horizontal position against the tension of the coil springs and to lower the shade bar.
2. A window shade fastening comprising guide rods disposed upon opposite sides of the window, a shade carrying bar slidably engaged with the rods, locking plates slid able on the rods and provided with longipermit the plates to move vertically and tudinal slots at their inner ends, pins carhorizontally, springs bearing against the ried by the shade-carrying bar and disouter ends of the plates and the shade carryposed in the slots to permit the plates to ing bar, and ieXible elements depending move vertically and expansible springs from the plates for moving the same against 40 bearing against the outer ends of the shade the tension of the springs.

A window shade Jfastener comprising a ing from the plates for moving the same pair of guide rods disposed upon opposite against the tension of the springs to lower sides of the window, a shade carrying bar the shade bar. slidably engaged with the rods, locking 45 3. In a window shade fastener, a pair oit plates slidable on the rods and provided vertical guide rods arranged upon opposite with longitudinal slots at their inner ends, sides of the window, a shade carrying bar pins at each end of the bar and having inhaving openings in its opposite ends which wardly directed longitudinally curved upper receive the guide rods and further provided ends, the slotted ends of the plates being 50 with notches in its upper face and at its engaged with the pins, springs bearing ends, locking plates slidable on the guide against the outer ends of the plate and the rods and having slidable and pivotal conshade carrying bar and normally retaining nection with the shade carrying bar, coil the plates in an angular position to cause springs encircling the guide rods and bear the same to bind on the guide rods and to 55 ing against the inner ends of the plates to dispose the slotted ends ot' the plates on the retain the same in binding engagement with curved ends of the pins, the curved ends ot the guide rods, and 'liexible elements dependthe pins binding against the adjacent end ing from the plates for moving the same to walls of the slots when the plates are in said a position where they will be free to slide angular position, and flexible elements for 60 on the guide rods. f moving the plates to a horizontal position 4. In a window shade fastener, a pair oit and to lower the shade bar. guide rods arranged upon opposite sides ot In testimony that l claim the foregoing the window frame and offset 'from the same, as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaeyes mounted at the lower ends of the rods ture in the presence of two witnesses.
