ALBERT C. ALTHOUSE, OF DUBLIN, PENNSYLVANIA,
HEATER.
Application led April 27,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT C. ALTHoUsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dublin, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating apparatus for small dwellings and like structures, one of its objects being to p-rovide a pipe* less hot air heater having means whereby heated air can be directed into rooms at either or both sides of a partition, the structure being simple and inexpensive, easily installed, and readily adjusted to direct the heated air as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing one way in which the dampers can be hung.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the jacket of a hot air furnace and the top of this jacket consists of a slightly reduced outlet flue 2 which extends into an opening 3 formed in the floor F of the structure to be heated, this opening being located preferably under la door D in a partition P so as to open into separate rooms in the structure. A register or grating l extends over the opening and has oppositely extending tongues 5 seated in grooves f in the floor F and the upper faces of which lie flush with the surface of the floor. Bearing members 6 are located upon the bottom of the grating at opposite sides of the same and mounted therein are fingers or trunnions 7 Copies of this patent may he obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

extending in opposite directions from semicircular dampers 8 which normally hang downwardly from the grating at the center thereof.
Formed longitudinally within the tongues 5 are grooves 9 and mounted in the grating 4 below the upper surface thereof and at the inner ends of the grooves are small sheaves 10 designed to support chains ll or the like which are secured at one end to the respective d-ampers 8. The other ends of the chains 11 are attached to hooks 12 or similar devices adapted to be placed in engagement with pins 13 formed in the tongues 5 thus to hold the dampers partly or entirely elevated below the grating. The chains and hooks lie within the grooves where they will not trip persons walking over the structure.
Under normal conditions heated air will ascend through the grating into the compartments at opposite sides of the partition P. By means of the chains, however, either or both of the dainpers can be partly or entirely closed, thus enabling the user to fully control the distribution of heated air.
lVhat is claimed is The combination with a floor structure having an opening therein, a partition having a door extending across the center of the opening, an air heater, and a fine extending from the air heater and into said opening, of a grating extending over the opening and having oppositely extending tongues seated in and flush with the floor structure, said tongues being grooved, dampers extending under the gra-ting and normally depending therefrom and adapted, when raised, to close communication between the heater and the respective sides of the partition and door, `flexible elements connected to the respeetive dampers` and means for adjustably connecting said elements to the tongues, said means and flexible elements being housed in the grooves.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT e. ALTHoUsE.
