ARTIST A. EDWARDS, OF NEW WILSON, OKLAHOMA.
CHICKEN-BROODER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, W917.
Application filed June 16, 1915. Serial No. 34,334.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTIST A. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Wilson, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken- Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brooders, and has for its object the production of a brooder for small chicks that is absolutely fireproof, but one that will at the same time keep the chicks warm by having the air within the hover maintained at a moderately uniform temperature.
My improved brooder is constructed entirely of sheet metal which makes it effective and at the same time lessens considerably the cost of construction.
The details of construction will be thoroughly brought out in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
My improved brooder is made of a cylindrical casing 1, divided into compartments 2, 3, and t, the compartment 2 constituting the lamp house, in which a. lamp l is placed,
said compartment containing a door 5 to admit of ready access to the lamp. The compartment 3 constitutes the heating chamber and is provided with a flue 6, said flue connecting with the lamp chimney at 7 and having its opposite end open as shown at 8. Leading from the heating chamber 3 is an outlet flue 9, which connects at'lO with a stack 11. The flue 9 and stack 11 pass upwardly inside of the chamber 4, which is the hover chamber of the brooder. The hover 4: is provided with a Window A and an open- 12, through which chicks may pass from the hover to a platform 13, which entirely surrounds the hover. 'The platform 13 is provided with anupstanding circumferential wall 14, having an inwardy turned ledge 15 at its upper end.
The floor of the hover is covered with about one inch of fine sand, as indicated at 16, and the platform 13 is provided with a channel 17 encircling the hover, said channel being also filled with sand, the sand within the hover and the channel coming to the same level at the top, which is also in the same plane as the platform 13.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The heat from the lamp, by reason of the construction of the flue 6, is caused to circulate throughout the chamber 3 before it passes from said chamber through the flue 9 and chimney 11. This circulation sufliciently heats the hover chamber for the protection of the chicks. The platform 13 constitutes a roving ground for the young chicks, the channel 17 which is filled with sand which prevents the chicks from running into contact with the platform at any point where it is hot enough to burn their feet.
While I have shown the brooder as cylindrical, I do not confine myself to the particular shape, but may make it square or rectangular in plan view.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A brooder comprising a plurality of superimposed chambers, the upper chamber constituting the hover, a roving platform entirely surrounding the hover and provided with a trench filled with sand encircling the outer wall of said hover, said hover having an opening that leads from the hover to the platform, and means for heating the hover.
2. A brooder comprising a plurality of chambers superimposed upon one another, the lower chamber constituting the lamp house and upper chamber constituting the hover, the intermediate being the heating chamber, a running platform encircling the hover, a channel containing sand intermedi ate the hover and the said platform, and means for causing heat to circulate throughout the heating chamber for warming the hover.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
B. F. Con, IRA WARD.
