To all 'whom it may concern lBe it known that I, SYLvANUs S. VAN KEUKEN, na citizen of the United States, resident'of Aberdeen, in the county of Brown and State of South Dakota, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Incubators; and l declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the' art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon., which form a part of this specication.

rlhe invention has relation to ncubators,
and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the casing, having usually ay framing provided upon each side and top and bottom with wooden insertion strips or panels 3 upon the outside, and fiber-board strips 4 upon the inside and spaced apart from the Wooden strips or panels, to provide dead air spaces 5 for insulating purposes, said fiberboard strips meeting at the corners of the casing. At the center of the casing is a narrow vertical heating chamber, provided at each side with a metal plate 7, the two plates forming the side walls of said chamber and terminating near the bottom of the casing, from which they are separated by intervals 8, said heating chamber having a top 9 carrying a laterally extending deflector strip 10, located near 'the top and eX- tending from end to end of the casing.
At each side of the heating chamber is an egg chamber 11, having an outer side wall 12 separated from the fiber-board strip by a space 13, constituting a second dead air or insulating space, and an kinner side Wall 14, located close to the radiator plate at this side. ln each egg chamber are a plurality of egg trays 415, usually two, one over the other and having suitable support, usually slidingin guideways 15', doors 16 in the front of the casing leading to the egg'champarts, as hereinafter set Specication of Letters Patent.

Fitting removably within the heating 'chamber is the radiator pipe 18 of a heater, including a vertical metal casing 18 located eXteriorly of the incubator and divided by a horizontal partition 19 into upper and lower chambers 20, 20. 'The heating tube has horizontal Lipper and lower branches 21, 21, connected by an inner bend 22, the outer end of 'the upper branch having communication with the upper chamber and the outer end ofthe lower branch terminating in a vertical tube 23, located in the lower chamber and designed for the introduction of a suitable source oit' heat supply, as a lamp or the chimney thereof. The upper branch of the heating tube terminates about centrally 'of the lower portion of the upper chamber, the
circulation being retarded. The retarding or upper chamber has a top hood or stack 202, provided with lateralair exit openings 203. y
The lower chamber is provided with an inner lining 24, spaced apart from the walls proper of said chamber and having a packing of asbestos or the like in the interval. This inner lining is also in the form of a vertical tube, of larger diameter than the tube 23, from'which it is separated by a space 25. rIhe tube 24 has a horizontal branch 26, of larger diameter than and surrounding the outer end of the heating tube p heatedair spreading in said chamber and its branch 21', said branch 26 having communi cation with the heating chamber for the introduction of fresh air, which passes yin through the open bottom' of the tube 24.
The backing of the heater forms a closure or door for the open end of the heating chamber, the bottom strip resting uponthe bottom of the heating chamber, and the ex-rterior metal casing being supported through engagement of the backing 28 with the upper and lower walls of the end of the heating chamber.
Below the' heating chamber a moistening tray 32 is provided, said tray sliding in a Supporting and inclosing box 33, the top of said box being provided with a series o1c perforations or slots 35 communicating with a slot 37 of the bottom strip of the heater,
said slot Vcommunicating with the heating chamber. The moistening tray is suitably provided with water, usually being iilled with sand saturated with water. This tray guarded at the top by a screen 13 against the admission of insects and dust, and lateral openings 14, leading from said passage.
The egg trays are provided each with a bottom l5. of'tiber-board and a false bottom 45 of wire screen cloth, located above and separated from the liber-board bottom by a eggs are turned twice daily, in practice, the trays being at the same time turned end for end and the bottom tray being placed at the top and vice versa, the trays being suitably numbered or tagged for identification.
The intermixed heat and fumes from the lamp are confined to the heater proper, and are notfallowed entrance to the heating chamber or to the egg chambers.
'The heated air in theheating chamber, the temperature of which is made higher by the side radiator plates, will pass out at the bottom at each side, under said radiator plates and under the lower egg trays, passing thence endwise of the egg chambers under the egg trays and up through passages 46 between the ends of the egg trays and the end walls of the egg chambers, the outer sldes of the egg trays making a cl'ose joint with the sides of the egg chambers, to prevent rising of the'heated air except at the ends of the tra-ys. The heated air as it rises above the upper egg trays will be detlected outwardly by the defiector strip, and will pass around the outer edges of vsaid strip into the narrow passage between the de- :tlector strip and the topof the egg chambers, through the felt strips and up through never downward, and this circulation is made less rapid by the retarding felt strips otl the ventilator, whereby the amount of heat required is reduced. The fresh air passing into the heating chamber is mixed with moisture from the moistening tray bcfore it is admitted to the egg chambers.
That I claim is 1. In an incubator, lateral egg chambers, a central heating chamber, egg trays in said chambers having imperforate bottoms extending entirely across said chambers, the
lower of said trays and the bottoms of the egg chambers being spaced apart to provide horizontal air passages and the said trays being spaced apart from the ends of said chambers to provide vertical air passages, said heating chamber having side walls provided with bottom openings in communication with said horizontal air passages.
2. In an incubator, lateral egg chambers, a central heating chamber, egg trays in said chambers having imperforate bottoms extending entirely across saidchambers, the lower of said trays and the bottoms of the egg chambers being spaced apart to provide horizontal air passages and the said trays being spaced apart from the ends of said chambers to provide vertical air passages, said heating chamber having side walls composed of metal plates provided with bottom openings in communication with said hori- I 1, zontal air passages, and a deflecting strip space 452, in which sand is located. The

4. In an incubator, lateral egg chambers, a central heating chamber, egg trays in said chambers having imperforate bottoms ex- .tending entirely across said chambers, the lower of said trays and the bottoms of the egg chambers being spaced apart to provide horizontal air passages, and the trays being spaced apart from the ends of said` Liconsa chambers to provide vertical Iair passages, and a deiecting stripv carried by the top of the heating chamber and extending laterally partly over the egg trays, said heating chamber having side walls provided lwith said horizontal air passages, and a removable heater includingva reversely bent tube having its ends opening eXteriorly oi said chamber, a lamp tube connected to the lower end of the heating tube, and a fresh air inlet tube surrounding the lamp tube having communication with"`said chamber.
