INCUBATOR.
SFECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,609, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 1885; Serial No. 166,044.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. NEwsoM, of Gallipolis, in the county of Gallia and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Incubator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved incubator and brooder which is simple in construction and effective in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter, and set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved incubator on the line 00 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line y y, Fig. 1.
The box A, supported by the legs A, has a cross-piece, B, in the top, and to the crosspiece a cover, 0, is hinged on each side to swing upward. A groove, B, is formed in the under side of the cross-piece and extends from ihe middle to both ends. The box A also has a door, D, hinged at its bottom edge in each end. The box A has a sheet-metal bottom, E, provided with a series of perforations, E, and with a downwardly-projecting bracket-arm, F, for holding a lamp, G, the chimney of which is below an aperture in the bottom or is passed through an aperture. In the box A, a sheet-metal box, H, is placed, and supported. It may be upon blocks a, resting upon the bottom of the box A, in which box H another smaller sheetmetal box, J, is held in such a manner that a space is formed between the bottoms and sides of the boxes H J, the ends of the said boxes being united or formed of one and the same piece. A door, K, is hinged at its bottom edge in each end of the box H, and has glass lights L and Ventilating-apertures M. Cleats N are secured longitudinally on the inner side of the box J, and serve to support the egg-tray O, which has a wire-netting bottom, 0, in which transverse strips 0 are secured. On the top of the box J cleats P are (No model.)
secured, for supporting a pan, Q, fitting under the upper part of the box H. Water is poured into the box H, and the eggs placed in the tray 0, between the strips 0 as shown, and the tray pushed into the box J, which is then closed. The lamp is lighted and heats the water in the box H, and the steam and vapor generated heat the bottom and sides of the box J and the air in the said box and pass off at the top through the space between the pan Q and the box H. When the covers 0 are closed, the hot air cannot escape. The grooves B give sufficient draft for the lamp. The doors D and K and the covers 0 O can be opened more or less for admitting fresh air, regulating temperatures, 8tc. The young chicks are placed in the pan Q, which serves as a brooder, and is heated by the heat rising from the bottom of the box H. The eggs can easily be removed, turned, or changed. When the brooder is not in use as such, it can be used for dough, &c., to causethe same to rise, or for keeping victuals warm, and for various other purposes. When the covers 0 are closed, the top of the box serves as a kitchentable, Sue. The main advantages, however, are that the incubator and brooder are very compact, occupy very little space, are simple in construction, and cannot get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an incubator, the combination, with the metal box H, of the metal box J Within the same, the cleats P on the top of the box J, and the pan Q on the said cleats, the box J being unitei at each end, at the bottom edge, to the box H, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In an incubator, the combination, with the metal box H, having the end doors, K, provided with glass lights and with ventilating-apertures below said lights, of the box J in the box H, a tray in the box J, anda lamp for heating water in the box, which lamp is held below the box H, the box J being united at each end,at the bottom edge, to the box H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the wooden box A, having a perforated metal bottom, E, of the bracket-arm F, the metal box H in the box A, the metal box J in the box H, and of an egg -tray in the box J, the box J being 0 in the box'J', and of a bracket-arm on the united at each end, at-the bottom edge, to the under side of the box A,substantially as herein :0 box H, substantially as herein shown and deshown and described. scribed. l
5 4. The combination, with the wooden box CHARLES M' A, having the grooved cross-piece B, of the Witnesses: hinged doors 0, the metal box H in the box HENRY T. BROWN, A, the metal box J in the box H, the egg-tray GEO; WELOH.
