'JOSEPHUS N. LARNED, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORTO HIMSELF AND MARTIN TAYLOR, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-COVER PROTECTORS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,356, dated September 17, 1872.
To all 'whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osEPHUs N. LARNED, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Book-Cover Protectors, of' which the following is a specification:
My improvements relate to Wrappers of' paper applied to the covers of books, tc., for protecting the same f'rom becoming soiled; and consist in the combination, with the side pieces ofl a book-cover protector, of fieXible metallic strips secured to said side pieces by pasting a strip of paper over the same or other-v wise, and arranged so that in applying the protector to the book-cover the said strips are bent over the edges of the cover with the overlapping portions of the protector, thereby securing` the protector to the boolrcover while allowing of the ready detachment thereof'.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis an elevation of my improved book-cover protector spread out preparatory to applying, to the book. Fig. II shows the protector applied to the book.
Like letters designate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the side pieces of' the protector, and B the back piece connecting the same. C represents the exible' metallic strips secured to the side pieces by pasting a strip of paper, c, over the same, or in any other suitable manner. As shown in the drawing one strip, C, is arranged near the back of' the book, and another strip at right angles thereto in the middle of the cover. For large books several strips may be arranged on the protector in either direction. The strips C are made of thin flexible metal, or other suitable material, so as to be readily bent in attaching and detaching the protector to the book-cover, while they are sufficiently stiff to secure the latten to the book-cover and to retain it in shape. The connecting or back piece Bis attached to the side pieces A so as to leave its ends free, which are Vfolded so as to adapt the length of the piece B to the size of the book. The back piece B may be attached to the side pieces either before or after the latter are applied to the book-cover, whereby the protector is adapted to books of' different thicknesses.
In applying the protector to a book the back piece is preferably first secured to the side pieces, so as to correspond with the thickness of the book when its ends are folded in accordance with the length of the book. The overlappin g portions ofthe side pieces are then folded over the edges of the book-cover in the ordinary manner, whereby the metallic strips O are bent so as to secure the protector tothe cover. The protector is detached from the book by straightening out the metallic strips C in an obvious manner.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the side pieces of' a book-cover protector, of the flexible metallic strips O for securing the protector to the book, substantially a-s hereinbef'ore set forth.
. J. N. LARNED.
