GERTRUDE M. scorr, or soorrs MILLS, OREGON.
HOT-WATER BOTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE M. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotts Mills, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to so-called hot water bottles of the well known kind that are made of pliable material such as rubber and are used therapeutically for the purpose of applying heat or cold locally to any portion of the body of a patient.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of the kind described with straps which may be used to securely fasten the bottle to a limb or the body of a wearer, and which present no objectionable projection either where, the bottle is in use'securedto the patient or when it is detacheding, 1 indicates a container-body, such, for 155 example, as a bottle or bag that is of familiar use in the art and which may be made of any usual or preferred size, or shape and of any preferred material, for example, india rubber. It is provided with any usual or preferred stopper-closed mouth 2 for the filling and emptying of the bottle.
My invention comprehends the attaching to or incorporating with the body 1 of a plurality of special pliable straps, arranged in pairs, four straps 3, 4:, 5 and 6 being illustrated by way of example.
The functions of said straps are twofold. One of them is to provide means for expansion of the girth of each pair to encircle the limb of a wearer, and when fastened in place to hold the bottle securely fixed to such limb. The other is to afford means for:
fastening the ends of companion straps one to the other so as to effect a, secure union between them without presenting any loose Specification of Letters Patent.

end, bulge or obstruction. The elimination of obstruction last above referred to is by my lnvention made effective underall conditlons of use to which my device may be applied. In the drawing the straps are shown secured snugly in place and drawn tautagainst the side of a filled bottle so that it may be handled with the freedom and facility of any ordinary bottle and without liability of the straps to catch on any object or to interfere in the least with the comfort of a wearer.
The straps are, as has }been specified, of special construction substantially as follows. Each strap is provided with a prefer ably diamond shaped slot 7 and each is tapered toward its free end, as indicated by the numeral 8, and is provided at its extremity with a slot-engaging head 9, the latter fleeing-preferably of a generally triangular contour, the apex of the triangle being toward the tapered end 8 of the strap of which it forms a part. In consequence of the union of the taper 8 and the head 9 in the manner just described a distinctively small neck 10 is for a. definite purpose provided at the point where they unite:
The purpose lastjalbove referred to is to provide means for securely fastening the ends of companion straps together, without obstruction, in all the various adjustments demanded of them in service. To that end each strap is provided along its length with a plurality of slots 7, three for each strap being illustrated, for example only, and the companionof each strap is provided with a like number of correspondingly disposed slots 7 The slots and the head of each strap co-register, respectively, but in reverse order with those of its companion. Consequently if the head 9 of onestrap be in; serted into the last slot 7 of the series of 'slots that is provided in a companion strap,
vproduces throughout all its' adjustments the effect substantiallyof one continuous strap instead or two; efiect be compared to that of an elastic band in respect only to its expansibility. Such comparison may be used for illustration only, because whereas my strap can be'used for the purpose for which it is designed the constant constrictive tension of an elastic band would be prohibitive of such use.
In thedrawing the straps are shown as adjusted to hug the wall of the body 1. It is also obvious without further illustration that if the girth of the straps were expanded to accommodate the limb of a patient between said wall and the straps, said straps would, upon proper adjustment, be made in like manner to hug said limb, and to secure to it the container of which the straps are members.
It is in order to effect the result of the union'of companion straps above described that I prefer to employ the form of strap already specified, and, in conjunction therewith, prefer to make the slots of diamond shape as illustrated. The said slots being disposed lengthwise of the strap wherein they are formed, present walls that converge preferably sharply toward its free end with the result that when two straps are united as specified, there is effected, under tension, a constant tendency toward a closer union between the straps without any such buckling or corrugating of the male strap as would occur therein by reason of its pliability without some special provision to prevent, the same, such for example as that afforded in the taperedstrap ends 8 and the necks 10 thereof, respectively.
It may be observed that the diamond shape of the slot 7 is in effect that of two triangles set base to base with their bases eliminated. The functional effect of the slot as above specified is obtained solely by reason of its converging walls, as was set forth, but the full diamond shape in the slot favors the re ception and release of a head 9, in the fasted ing and unfastening operation of a pair of straps, and is, for that reason, preferred.
The operation of my device, it is believed, will be readily understood from the foregoing specification; but it may be proper to add that each pair of straps is adjustable independently of others, that the various sets of straps may therefore be made to conform to variations in size of the difierent parts of any limb to which they may be applied.
WVhat I claim is: j
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a container-body, and pliable straps thereon arranged in pairs, of a series of slots in each strap, a series of slots in each companion strap, and a slot-engaging head on the end of each one of each pair of straps, said slots of each of said series and said heads, respectively, being co-1-egistering one with another, substantially for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a container-body, and pliable straps thereon arranged in pairs, of a series of slots in each strap, a series of slots in each companion strap, and a slot-engaging head on the end of each one of each pair of straps, said slots of each of said series and said heads, respectively, being co-registering one with another, said slots being diamond shaped, rcspec-tively, said straps being tapered toward their respective heads and said heads, respectively, being of triangular contour, as specified, and each having its apex toward the tapered end of its respective strap.
3. The combination with a pair of pliable straps joined together, and designed and adapted to have their free ends united under tension, each strap being tapered toward its free end, and each being provided with a slot whose side walls also converge toward its free end, of a slot-engaging head on the end of each strap, each head being of a triangular contour, as specified, and having its apex toward the tapered end of its strap, whereby when the head of one strap engages the slot of a companion strap, tension upon the straps tends to draw them into closer union.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
