Description

'1. H. FITZGIBB ON.
improvement in Picture-Mounts.
N0. 131,260.. Patented Sep.10,1872.
Witnesses: r V64 inventor.
.dttomeys,
S'rns JOHN H. FITZGIBBON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN P|TURE-MOUNTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. FITZGIBBON, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mat or Mount for Pictures; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in a prepared flap, slip, or cover made of paper, or any other suitable material, with mucilage, gum, or other adhesive substance over its entire inner surface, such flap, slip, or cover forming a part of or attached to a mount or mat for gems, ferrotypes, photographs, or
other pictures that are to be seen through an opening in the mount or mat, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which is a perspective view of a picture-mat with my flap attached thereto.
A represents a mat or mount, having an opening through which the picture is to be seen. B is the flap, slip, or cover, which may be made of paper, muslin, or any other suitable material, and may be made a part of the mount or mat, or stuck or otherwise fastened in position on the back of the mat or mount,
the flap may be dampened and then pressed down, when it will adhere to the back of the picture and mat or mount in a neat and finished manner, keeping the picture permanently in its place.
Besides the advantages of giving a neater finish to the picture and keeping it permanently in its place, it will also be a great saving in time, labor, and material over the old method of attaching the pictures.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
In combination with a mat or mount, having an opening through which a picture is to be seen, I claim a flap, slip, or cover made of paper or other suitable material forming part of or attached to said mat or mount, and having its inner surface covered with mucilage or other adhesive substance, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
.In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1872.
JOHN H. FITZGIBBON.
