Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH J. LYNN, a subject of .the Kingof Great Britain, and a resident of-MooseJaw, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Imcan not easilybe distorted and bent out of alinement, and which may be sold at a relatively low cost. p The, invention further aims at the provision I of a door catch of this character which may be constructed from sheet metal and wire, and which may be readily a 4 pliedto the door and the door casing wit out mutilating the same.
The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be more or less described, and more or less understood, from the following detailed decription ofvthe present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wher'einz I r I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door catch constructed according to the present invention, and as applied tothe door and the casing, the door being shown open.

, same being preferably formed from a single sheet of metal which is bentv substantially U-shaped to provide a closed side 10, j a bottom 11, and a top 12, the bottom and top 11 and 12 being provided with attaching flanges 13 which are turned outwardly from the free edges of the top and bottom and adapted to be, secured by screws or the like againstthe inner side of a door casing A. The casing thus formed is open at it opposite ends, and closed at its inner side by the adjacent face of'the door casing A.
The bottom 11 of the casing is provided with a fixed jaw 14 at the forward end thereof, the jaw 14 being preferably in the form of a metallic block which is riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the bottom 11. The jaw 14 isadapted to engage at one side against the side 10 of the casing, and is adapted to cooperate with a movable jaw 15 which is pivoted at its rear end upon a rivet or pin 16 which passes through the side 10 of the casing. The jaw 15 is held against thecasing sides 10 and in alinement with the fixed jaw 14 by the pivot pin 16. The jaws 14 and 15 are provided upon their outer ends with oppositely beveled faces 17 forming a flaring throat, and the faces 17 are adapted to converge at their inner ends and to be brought into contact with each other by the closing of the jaws 15 and 14. j The jaws 14 and 15 are also provided, near their forward ends, with registering recesses orgrooves18 which extend transversely acrossthe inner opposite faces of the jaws and which provide a pocket, or inclosure for (engagement with a co-acting member.' I
The jaw 15 is yieldingly urged against the fixed jaw 14, by aspring 19 which is interposedbetween the jaw 15 and the top 12 ofthe casing, and which is held in position by the provision of a finger 20 which is preferably stamped and bent inwardly from the top 12. The'finger 20 is bent into substantially right angles with respect to the top' 12. Thefinger is of reduced width with respect tothe top 12. and is adapted to pro: ject into the upper end of the spring 19 to hold the latter from displacement.
The co-acting member 21 is in the form of a bail and "comprises a single length of wire which is bent substantially U-shaped and which has its extremities overturned to provide loops 22 and 23 which are preferably elongated 'to provide slots in thewopfl posite-ends ofthe bail foradjiisting thelatter. The above described; structure of; catch prov des a device having relatively few movable parts, the spring and jaw 15 being the only parts which move, and thus the device is relatively strong and durable and noteasily distorted or damaged. The jaws 14 and 15 may be formedfrom metallic bars, or the like, and the casing from sheetimetal, which is vbentto the desired form, and stamped to provide the spring supporting finger 20. The co-acting mem -ber is formed of a single length of wire ,whichhis, bent in a manner which is easy 'to manufacture, and may be applied tothe door and adjusted "thereon -w-ithout '-mortis-' ing or otherwisemutilating the door.
It is, of course,'understood'jthat various changes "may be made in the "construction I and, design of this door catch,"without *de-i parting, from the spirit of thisinvention, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claimsn I claim:
1.
