To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Carriers or Covers for Canteens or Water-Bottles, &c., of which the followi ng is a specifi cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention has relation to carriers, covers, or jackets on the order of those in which canteens and water-bottles usually are carried. More especially,itrelates to the provisions for closing a cover about the shoulders and neck of a canteen, water-botsaid regulation canteen-carrier or cover has the upper portion of its back part formed or otherwise provided with two upwardly projecting, oppositely located, closure-ears or flaps. These are "adapted to be bent or folded forward over the shoulders of the canteen so that their free ends shall lie against the outer surface of the earrier'or cover-front at somewhat widely separated places. Each closure-ear or flap has fastening means of its own, of the well-known glove-fastener or stud-and-socket type, the

stud-members of the two fastener-arrangements being fixed at laterally opposite points on the carrier or cover-front, and. a

socket-member being fixed on each of the respective ears or flaps. With this construction and arrangement, employing separate fastening means for each closure-ear orfiap, and fastening the respective closure-ears or flaps to the carrier or cover-front at'laterally opposite places, not only are duplicate fastenings employed, but each ear or flap is fastened or unfastened by-operations' and motions separate from and additional to those by which the other ear or flap is fastened or unfastened. Thus, two separate fastening operations are required, and also two separate unfastening operations.

The objects of the invention are to simplify the closing and fastening construction and arrangement of a carrier, cover, or jacket of the order aforesaid. Also, to reduce the number of fastener-devices employed and thereby effect a saving incost, as well as reduce the expense of applying fast'enings in the process of manufacturing the carrier, cover, or jacket. Also, to make 'it easier for a soldier or other person to unfasten the closure-ears or flaps and open the latter, as for the purpose of enabling him to withdraw the canteen, water-bottle, or other contained article from the carrier or cover when required, and to re-position the closure-ears or flaps and refasten them in closed position after replacing the canteen, water-bottle or other article within the carrier or cover. Also, to improve the appearance of the carrier or cover.

The invention consists essentially in a carrier or cover having opposite closurefiaps which are so formed upon or applied to the carrier or cover-back, and also so shaped and proportioned in length, as to enable them to be brought together at their free ends upon the carrier or cover-front, and also having a single fastener-device, or set of coacting fastenerdevices, for the two flaps whereby they jointly may be secured in closed condition. Thereby, instead of the flaps being fastened separately in positions comparatively distant or remote from each other, they are brought together at their front ends and secured or fastened by one andthe same fastener or set of fastenerdevices.

The fastener-device or set of fastener-devices employed'in carrying the invention into effect may vary in character, in practice- Ihave presented herein an illustrative embodiment of the invention in which a stud 1s fixed in the front of the carrier or cover, at a middle point, and one of the flaps is furnished withjaneye to fit over said stud, while the other flap is furnished with a socket-member to fit upon thepor- 'tion of thestudwhich projects through the said eye.

In conformity, With the invention, closure- flaps 3, 3 are so formed upon or applied to the carrier or cover-back, and are so shaped and proportioned :in length, as to enable them to be bent or folded over the shoulders of the contained canteen, Water-bottle, or other article so as to encircle the upstanding neck thereof,5,and brought together at their free ends upon the front of the carrier-cover. In this illustrative embodiment the said flaps are of such length, etc., that the said free ends are adapted to overlap each other, as represented in Fig. 1, with one thereof lying upon the other. The form of fastenerrdevice shown in this instance'issuited to this overlapping of the fla s..
