HUBERTVWILLIAM woons, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
sEoTIoNAL' RAIL non roon-rr ayiixie.
Application filed August 22, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT WILLIAM Wooos, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York have invented an Improvement in Sectional Rails for Pool-Playing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide means for playing the game of pool on an ordinary dining or other table, and which when not in use can be laid away on a shelf or in a drawer or can be packed for shipment in a relatively small box or package.
The invention consists essentially of a plurality of rail sections, the respective ends of which are provided with a mortise and a tenon and which are provided with cut-in pockets, that is, the pockets are out into the inner sides ofthe rail sections. I am thus enabled to provide at very small expense, compact and easily assembled and dis-assembled means for playing pool, adapted for either children or adults, that will enable the game to be played at any time in the home.
With these and other objects in view, I have devised the novel structure which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating how the game of pool may be played with my novel rail section upon an ordinary dining table;
Fig. 2 a perspective view on an enlarged scale of one of the corner sections detached, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the side sections detached.
10 denotes the corner sections and 11 the side sections. Each section is shown as provided with a pocket 12, elongated longitudinally of the section and provided at its midlength with a relatively. narrow neck 13 through which balls may pass if the shots are made with a fair degree of accuracy,

the elongated shape of the pockets causing them to ordinarily retain the balls if they pass through the neck. Each section is provided at one end with a mortise 14 and at the other end with a corresponding tenon 15. The mortises and tenons are preferably made with dovetail. sides so that the sections when joined together will be self retaining in place without other attaching means.
In assembling, a dining or other elongated table may be used which is preferably provided with a cover, an ordinary table cloth being admirably adapted for the purpose. The mortises and tenons fit closely enough so that the sections when united will make a perfectly firm rail, but on the other hand they should not fit so tightly as to make assembling and disassembling at all difficult. The mortises and tenons should be fitted so that when the tenons are placed over the mortises they may be readily pressed into place.
I have shown a lay-out consisting of four curved corner sections and two straight side sections, although it should be understood that the invention is not limited to any special number of sections or of pockets. I have found that a lay-out of four curved and two straight sections, each with a pocket at its midlength, meets the ordinary requirements admirably. The sections may be made of single pieces of wood or other suitable material, or they may be made up of veneers or small pieces of wood matched and glued together, so as to permit the use of small pieces of waste or narrow lumber. I preferably made the sections seven eighths of an inch thick, but the invention is of course not limited to any special thickness of the sections.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A rail for pool playing comprising curved corner sections and straight side sections, the inner sides of all of said sections midway between their ends being provided with cut-in pockets, the ends of each section having means for inter-locking with the contiguous ends of adjoining sections, whereby relative movement of the sections is prevented.
2. A rail for pool playing comprising a plurality of corner sections and side sections, the inner sides of all of said sections midway between their ends being provided with cut-in pockets, one end of each section being provided with a dovetail tenon and the other end with a correspondingly 10 shaped mortise, whereby the ends of each section may be inter-locked with contiguous ends of adjoining sections.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HUBERT -WILLIAM WOODS.
