Beit known that I, HENRY L. HAsKELL, a citizen of the United States, residingat the city of Ludington, county of Mason, State of Michigan, have invented y certain new and useful Improvements in a Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in game apparatus.

The main object of this invention is to provide an improved game apparatus by which games may be played which are interesting to both children and adults. v

Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the ldetailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of `my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. 1

A structure embodying thefeatures of my invention is clearly illustrated. in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation view of my improved game apparatus. Fig. 2 is an `enlarged cross-sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved game apparatus in the collapsed or knockdowncondition. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view showing' the manner of hinging the end pieces B to the base portion A. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 5 5 of Fig. '2, showing the arrangement of the pockets B in the end pieces B.

ln the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, l provide a base A, on which the remaining parts of the apparatus are supported. The base A is made hollow to receive the impelling or snapping devices a. These impelling or snapping devices are preferably formed of Wire, and l so illustrate and denote them herein. The base A is preferably made up of a bottom plate e, top plate c, and the interposed side pieces or rails e. side rails e are provided with holes at suitable intervals to receive the .downturned ends a of the wires a., so that they are supported transversely in the base, as clearly appears in Fig. 2.. The top board e of the base A is provided with a centrally-located. longitudinal slot A. This slot A is. of suiiicient width to receive the ball X and to allow the same to rest upon the impelling or snapping devices a. At each end of the slot A are holes c', adapted to receive the ball X,

On each side of the slot A is a series of openings A, arranged so that `the impelling or snapping devices may be engaged therethrough with a suitable instrument X, as illustrated in Fig. 1. These openings A are preferably of sufficient length', so that a pair of adjacent wires a may be engaged through each opening. There being an odd number of impelling devices illustrated only one wire can be engaged through theopening A at the right of the structure shown in the drawgfhe end piecesB are secured to the base A o posite to the slot A. These pieces are pre erably securedin position byhinges b, so that the same may be folded upon the base when the apparatus is knocked down for transportation or storage purposes.

The top piece C rests upon the upper ends l of the end pieces `B and is supporte thereby.

The upper ends of the endpieces are notched and the ends of the top pieces are rabbeted, so that the top piece serves as a brace to hold Nets D are provided for retaining the ball. These nets are secured to the bottom piece at each side of the slot A and to the top piece C. lThus secured the nets do not prevent the folding or collapsing of the device when it is desired to do so.

My improved game apparatus is designed for playing games resembling football, basket-ball, or the like. ln playing the game each of the players is provided with a pencil-like instrument X, by which the impelling. or snapping devices are snapped,

l. preferably employ as a ball the light resilient balls commonly designated as pingpong7 balls, although any light ball will produce satisfactory results. By thus arranging the snapping devices they may be easily. snapped by means oi the instrument X', so that the ball is thrown considerable distances.

It is evident that games may be played with my improved. game apparatus by comparatively young children, and at the same time it ai'lords suiiicient amusemen and eX citement to make the same interesting to adults as well as children, and it is a game in which skill aids in securing results. l have illustrated and described the same in detail in the form preferred by me on account of structural simplicity and convenience in collapsing for shipping or storing. I am, however, aware that the same may be very greatly varied in structural details without departing from my invention, and l. desire to claim the same speciiically as illustrated, as well as broadly.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a game apparatus, the combination oi' a hollow base portion made up of a top and a bottom board with interposed side ieces -or rails, said side pieces being rablieted away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the rabbeted portions of said side pieces of said. base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base holes in said top of said base beyond the ends of said slot, a series'of holes in said top board oi said base at each side of said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon; a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces whereby said top piece is supported and said end pieces are retained in their open position; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said ,pocketopenings, nets secured to the top board of said base at each side of the said slot therein,

2. In a game apparatus, the combination of a hollow base portion made up of a bottom and a top board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the rabbetedpori tion of the said side pieces of said base; a

centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base; a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side of the said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby said top piece is supported and said end pieces are retained in their open position; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocket-openings; nets secured to the top board of said base at each side of the said slot therein, and to said top piece; and a suitable ball, for the purpose speciiied.

3. In a game apparatus, the combination of a hollow base portion made up of a top and a bottom board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the rabbeted portions of said side pieces of said base 5 a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base; holes in said top board of said base beyond the ends of said slot g a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side of said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby said top piece is supported and said end pieces are retained in their open position; nets secured to the top board of said base at each side of the said slot therein, and to said top piece and a suitable ball, for the purpose speciiied.

4. In a game apparatus, the combination of a hollow base portion made up of a top and a bottom board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the rabbeted portions of said side pieces of said base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side of said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon; a to p piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby said top piece is supported and said end pieces are retained in their open position; nets secured to the top board of said base at each side of the said slot therein, and to said top piece; and a suitable ball, for the purpose specified.

5. In a game apparatus, the combination of a hollow base portion made up of a bottom IOS and a top board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbetedA away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the rabbeted portions of the said side pieces of said base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base; holes in said top board of said base beyond the ends of said slot; a series of holes in said topboard of said base at each side of said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces; a top piece; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; nets arranged at each side 'of said slot in the said top board of said base; and a suitable ball, for the purpose speciiied.

6. In a game apparatus, the combination of a hollow base portion made up of a bottom and a top board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged insuitable holes in the rabbeted portions of the said side pieces of said base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base; a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side'of the said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces; a top piece; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocket-openings; nets arranged at each side of said slot in the said top board of said base; and a suitable ball, for the purpose specified.

In a game apparatus, the combination of' a hollow base portion made up of a bottom and a top board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged in suitable holes in the .rabbetedportions of the said side pieces of said base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base ;.holes in said top board of said base beyond the ends of said slot; a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side of the said slot, through which the said wires may be engaged; end pieces; a top piece; nets arranged at each side'of said slot in the said top board of said base; and a suitable ball, for the purpose specified.

8. In a game apparatus, the combinationy of a hollow base portion made up of a bottom and a top board with interposed side pieces or rails, said side pieces being rabbeted away at their upper inner corners; a plurality of impelling-wires having downturned ends arranged insuitable holes in the rabbeted portions ofthe said side pieces of said base; a centrally-located longitudinal slot in said top board of said base; a series of holes in said top board of said base at each side of the said slot, through which the said snapping-wires may be engaged; end pieces; a top piece; nets arranged at each side of said-slot in the said top board ofsaid base; and a suitable ball, for the purpose specified.

9. In agame apparatus, the combination of a base provided with ,a longitudinal slot and with holes therein beyond the ends of said slot, and provided with a series of holes at each side of said slot; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base, transversely to said slot therein; end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon; a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby they are retained in their open position and the said top piece is supported; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocket-openings; and nets secured to said base at each side of the said slot therein, and to said top piece, for the purpose specified.

10. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided with a longitudinal slot and with a series of holes at each side of said slot; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; end pieces hinged to said base so that they maybe folded thereon; a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby they are retained in their open position and the said top piece is supported; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocket-openings; and nets secured to said base at each side ofthe said slot therein, and to said top piece, for the purpose speciiied.

11. In a game apparatus, the combination of a.base provided with a longitudinal slot and with holes therein beyond the ends of said slot, and provided with a series of' holes at each side of said slot g a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; `end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon; a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby they are retained in their open position and the said top piece is supported; and nets secured to the said base at each side of the said slot therein, and to said top piece, for the purpose specified.

12. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided with alongitudinal slot and with a series of holes at each side of said 4 slot a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; end pieces hinged to said base so that they may be folded thereon; a top piece arranged to engage said end pieces, whereby they are retained in their open position and the said top piece is supported; and nets secured to said base at each side of the said slot therein, ging to said top piece, for the purpose speci- 13. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided With a longitudinal slot and With a series of holes at each side oi' said slot; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; end pieces; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; and nets arranged at each side of the slot in said base, for the purpose specilied.

15. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided With a longitudinal slot and With holes therein beyond the ends of said slot, and provided With a series of holes at each side of said slot; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; and nets arranged at each side of the slot in said base, for the purpose specified.

16. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided With a longitudinal slot and With a series of holes at each side of said slot a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; and nets arranged at each side of the slot in said base, for the purpose specified.

17. In a game apparatus, the combination of a base provided With a longitudinal slot and With holes therein beyond the ends of said slots; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; end pieces; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; and nets arranged at each side of the slot in said base, for the purpose specified.

18. In a game apparatus, the combination of a baseprovided With a longitudinal slot; a plurality of impelling devices arranged in said base transversely to said slot therein; end pieces; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; and nets arranged at each side of and nets arranged at each side oi the slot in said base, for the purpose specified.

21. In a game apparatus, the combination With a base of a plurality of impelling devices arranged thereon to form supports for the missile; end pieces; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; and suitable nets, for the purpose specied.

22. In a game apparatus, the combination with a base of a plurality of impelling devices arranged thereon to form supports for the missile; and suitable nets, for the purpose specified.

23. In a game apparatus, the combination with a base of a plurality of impelling devices arranged thereon to form supports for the missile; end pieces; pocket-openings in said end pieces; suitable pockets for said pocketopenings; and a ball or missile retainer, for the purpose specified.
