Description

s. B. COCHRANE.
BARREL HEAD. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 31. 1919.
Patented July 22, 1919.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH c0., WASHING-1N, D. c.
SAMUEL B. COGI-IRANE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BARREL-HEAD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. COGHRANE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel- Heads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to barrel heads especially designed for use on metal barrels, and it has for its object to provide a head of improved construction which will comply with the requirements of the internal revenue laws relating to spirits packages.
These requirements include the provision of a superimposed layer of material capable of receiving the marks, brands and stamps and of holding the tacks used in securing the stamps as specified in the regulations. It is the aim of this invention to provide a barrel head of extremely simple construction having a superimposed layer of wood composition adapted to receive the brands and tacks for holding the stamps, and which is securely retained as a part of the head. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompany ing drawings, which constitutepart of this specification, and then more specificallydefined inthe claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a top plan view of a barrel head constructed substantially in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a broken section through one edge of the head showing it inserted in the end of a metal barrel or container, and
Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the chime crimped over the end of the container.
The barrel head comprises a metal plate or disk 1 having an outwardly turned annular flange 2 which is preferably made integral with a chime ring or flange 3. Superimposed upon the metal plate or disk 1 is a layer of wood composition 6 preferably at least an inch thick and of sufficient density to receive the brands and stamps which must be aflixed to the head of the barrel inasmuch Specification of Letters Patent.

as the containers themselves on which said head is designed to be used are made entirely of metal. The composite layer 6 is also capable of holding the tacks used for fastening the stamps, said tacks being intended to be driven into said layer in the same manner as in a wooden board. The flange 2 overhangs the composite layer and is preferably provided with a plurality of annular shoulders or abutments 5 to which the composite layer conforms when poured in place when in a plastic form. After said layer has hardened, the shoulders or abutments eifectually retain the composite material in place as a part of the head.
The annular flange 2 may be formed with an annular recess 4 adjacent the chime ring 3, the latter being normally arranged in horizontal position before the head is secured to a container. After the head is introduced into the end of a metal barrel or container 7, as indicated in Fig. 3, the recess 4 is located interiorly of the extremity of said container. When, however, the chime ring 3 is crimped down over the end of the container, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 4:, said extremity of said container is seated in the recess, as at 8, so that the bent over edge of the chime is brought into the plane of the walls of the container and leaves no protwberances which might be struck and tend to open the joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A barrel head comprising a metal inner plate having an outwardly turned annular flange, an outer layer of composite material for the purpose specified covering said inner metal plate, and overhanging means on the annular flange for retaining said composite layer in place.
2. A barrel head comprising a metal inner plate having an outwardly. turned annular flange, an outer layer of composite ma terial for the purpose specified covering said inner metal plate, overhanging shoulders on the annular flange for retaining the composite layer in place, and a chime ring integral with said annular flange for securing the head to a barrel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
SAMUEL B. GOOHRANE.
