"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAVINO RODRIGUEZ, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
LAMP ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAvINo RODRIGUEZ, a citizen of the Republic of Mexico, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
In extinguishing an ordinary kerosene lamp a person either blows his breath down the chimney or elevates the chimney above the burner and blows his breath to extinguish the flame. The first method is dangerous and the second troublesome.
Devices have been rovided for extinguishing lamps mechanically, without necessitating the employment of a persons breath or the elevation of the lamp chimney, but in all such devices the flame is instantaneously extinguished. From experience I have found that the immediate extinguishing of a lamp is not desirable in a great many instances, as, for instance, when a person is about to retire, and the lamp 1s arranged some distance from his bed, under which conditions were the lamp immediately extinguished he would be forced to grope in the darkness from the lamp to the bed. There are numerous other occasions which make it advantageous to have a light burning for a comparatively short period after the extinguishing means have been operated, and it is the primary ob]ect of the present invention to produce a burner having a lamp extinguishlng means assoeiated therewith which, after operation will permit of the burning of the wick for an interval. of from ten to fifteen minutes.
The improvement is in the nature of a folding device for the wirk whereby, when operated the wick is brought entirely out of contact with the oil in the lamp bowl, and only the gases from the oil in the saturated wick are permitted to burn before the flame becomes extinguished.
For a more comprehensive understanding of the improvement, the operation and ad vantages thereof, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation, parts broken away and parts being in section, of a lamp burner arranged upon a lamp, the said Specification of Letters Patent.

burner being provided with the improvement;
Fig. 2 is a substantially similar view, but showing the wick folded and raised above the oil level in the lamp bowl, as when the flame is to be extinguished; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the wick folded and pierced by the flexible element constituting the improvement.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the numeral 1 designates the body of an ordinary lamp, 2 the burner therefor, and 3 the chimney supported upon the burner.
The burner is provided with the usual wick 4t and shaft 5 provided with the usual toothed wheels engaging with the wick for elevating the latter.
The wick is normally arranged below the level of the oil in the lamp bowl, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The only change I make in the burner, if the same can be considered a change is to bore a hole in the threaded bottom thereof, the said hole being designated by the numeral 6 and through this hole is passed a thin wire 7 that is also inserted at spaced intervals through the wick. The inner end of the Wire has attached thereto a flat metallic plate 8 which bears against one of the sides of the wick, and if desired the wire may be secured to the opposite side of the wick. The wire has its outer end projecting to one side of the burner and lamp bowl, so that this end is readily accessible to the operator. By drawing the wire outwardly the plate contacting with the wick will cause the wick to be elevated and folded, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, bringing the said wick out of the oil in the lamp bowl. The wick is sufliciently saturated to ermit of the ignition of the gases from the nel for a determined period, say from between ten and fifteen minutes after the same has been raised above the oil 11, so that the user of the lamp will have ample time to erform slight duties before the flame is ully extinguished. By forcing the wire in an opposite or inward direction with respect to the lamp the wick will be again immersed in the body of oil, and it is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages and simplicity of the device Will be and through the'Wick at spaced intervals, readily apparent. and a plate secured to the inner end of said 10 Having thus described the invention,. wl1at flexible element contacting: With one of the is claimed is: 1 U sides of the Wick adjacent toth'einner end 5 In combination With a" lanip, including a of said Wick, as and for the purpose set burner, a wick therefor, and means for raisforth. ing or lowering said w ckger' a flexible wire I-ntesti'khony whereof I aflix my signature. 15 passing through the bottom of the burner GAVINO RODRIGUEZ.
