l Specification of Letters Patent. Patented dlllillly le i919 Application nled September 21, 1918. Serial No. 255,011.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OGoNilioR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llllinois,l have' invented a certain new and invention is to provide a roller side bearing' wherein are employed a plurality of anti- :t'rictioii rollers, at least one of which, after each actuation and upon removal of the pressure, will act under the influence of gravity t1 return all the rollers to normal position in readiness for another actuation.
Another object of the invention is to `provide a side bearingemploying a plurality4 of anti-friction rollers so arranged that the pressure is always maintained approximately centrally of the -body bolster when the side bearing proper' is attached thereto.
ln the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, .sectional view, taken transversely of the body and truck holsters of a car/'and showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. `2 is a top plan view of the side bearing' proper, detached. And Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of liig. 4 y
ln said drawing, 10 denotes the upper portion of a truck bolster: and l1 the under side vof a body bolster of a railway car and between which my` improved anti-friction bearing is adapted to be placed.'
`As shown in `the drawing, the bearing proper is attached to the body bolster andv consists, broadly, of a `retaining member A and a pair of'anti-friction rollers B-l.-
rllhe retaining member A is preferably in the form oit a casting and has an upper horizontal wall 12 with perforated ears 13 atl the corners thereof by which the member is adapted to be riveted to the body bolster.'
'lhe member A` is alsoprovided with -a pair `walls let- 1a on, the inner ment, the left one ol 'the '-16 of the flan es.
of downwardly extending, spaced, parallel opposed sides of which 4are formed inwardly extending Hanges or supporting tracks. Each of these guidingor supporting tracks is formed with ahorizontal section, as indicated at 15, and
with upwardly curved sections 16-16 at each side thereof. The memberA has the upper wall thereof cut away near its ends, as indicated atlZ-l?, to permit the insel. tion-of the anti-friction rollers B as hereinafter explained. Furthermore, the upper Wallof the member A is -formed to lact as a `bearlng plate centrally of the member A, as indicated at 18.
Each of the anti-friction rollers B is inV the forni of a cylinder `with preferably inte- 'gral trunnions 19-`19 at vthe ends thereof, said trunnions 19 rolling upon the anges 15- 1(. rlhe rollers are inserted within the retanung member A before the latter is applied to the bolster, asy will be understood. posltlon of the .parts is as` 1, from which it will be seen rllhe normal shown in Fig. that the rollers B are themselves in contact but are slightly spaced from the upper bearing surface 1S of the retaining member A and the bearing surface of thetruck bolster l0. When. the bearing comes into action upon relative approach out the body and truck holsters, it is evident that the rollers vB will contact with the truck bolster and bearing plate 18 and tlieftrunnions 19 will, at yf irst, be lifted out of contact with the horizontal portions l5` o1 the Hanges. As the two holsters move relatively to each other, as for instance, when the body bolster 1l moves to the right as viewed in Fig. 1, and. the truck bolster 10 is assumed to be stationary, the anti-friction rollers will roll toward the left of the retainingr member A, asviewed in lFig. 1. After a slight movet rollers B will be relieved of pressure and4 will gradually be forced up the corresponding curved portions With the other roller B, 1t will be evi ent that the point of contact therebetween and the body bolster will ap` proach the center. of the sirable feature, as will be evident to those skilled in the art. Upon release of the pressure, it is evident that the end roller .B which hasbeen elevated, will automatically, under the influence of gravity, roll down the inclined danges 16 and simultaneously force body bolster, a dethe other roller back to its normal position,
thus placing the bearing in condition for i ,another actuation.
The side bearing .can be made comparatively light; consists of'few parts, which will not easily getou't of order, and effectively. returns ,the parts to proper position after each actuation. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may =be made as,
for instance, in theL number of anti-friction .rollers employed, without departing from i ber, thelatter being provided with roller\ supporting tracks vhaving upwardly curved end portions, said rollers` having trunnions M 'coperable'. with said tracks, one end roller bein elevated upon the corresponding up: war ly curved end portions of the tracks upon actuation of the device and thereby adapted, upon release of pressure, to itself return vto normal under the influence of gravity and force the remainder of the rollers also tok normal position.- v e 2. In a device of the character described,v adapted to be interposed lbetween two rela- Atively movable elements, the combination with a retaining member adapted to be se-l v cured to one of said elements, said retainf ing member having a. pair of spacedparallel- Walls provided wlth roller supporting tracks, of a lurality of anti-friction rollers in peripher contact in normal ositionand 'carried b". said member and posed between .sai flanges, said rollers havmg means coperable with said tracks, said tracks being formed at the ends thereof withsections adapted to elevate the end rollers upon actuation of the device.
3. In a side bearing for railway cars the combination with a retaining member adapted to be secured to a car body bolster', said retaining member having depending side walls provided with a pair of flange tracks, one on the inner face of each side wall, of a plurality of anti-friction rollers carried by said member, said anti-friction rollers having trunnions riding upon said tracks, the tracks being each formed with a horizontal central section and upwardly extending end sections, said pair of tracks being coperable with all of said rollers.
4. In a side bearing for railwa cars, in
combination, a 4truck bolster, a bo y bolster opposed thereto, a retaining membersecured to the body bolster, rollers associated with said retaining member, the sides of the retaining member being provided with flanges forming a. track for the rollers, the said flanges being straight intermediate their ends, and upturnedat their ends, the rollers being ,provided with end trunnions riding on the said flanges, said trunnions in the normal position of therollers being upon the straight portions of the flanges.
AIn witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 3rd day of Sept., 1918. v l
